Mankato, Minn. – Saturday night Elicia Anderson ran in her second straight NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, competing in the 5,000-meter run. Of the 14 runners in the field, Anderson placed sixth with a time of 16:50.61 and grabbed All-American status with her finish.
Anderson's finish among the top eight placers makes her an All-American for the third time in her illustrious Marauder career. She was also an All-American during the 2010 cross country season, placing 14th at the NCAA Championships. Her other All-American finish came last spring, during the 2011 outdoor track & field season, when she finished fourth in the 10,000-meter run.
“It feels really good to bring home some hardware,” Anderson said of her finish and grabbing an All-American nod. “I've worked really hard for it.”
The Wrightsville native becomes just the second Marauder woman, along with Priscilla Jennings, to be an All-American in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track, and joins Jennings as only the second woman in school history to be an NCAA Indoor All-American. Anderson's former teammate was an All-American seven total times during her career in cross country and indoor and outdoor track from 2006-2010.
The Eastern York High School graduate set her sights, aspiring to be like Jennings, according to her coach, Andy Young. “It means a lot to her to have any comparison [to Jennings],” Young said. “Priscilla was a major inspiration for her.”
Young continued to shower his star pupil with praise. “I'm really proud of the person she has become and her willingness to grow as an athlete and person during the past year.”
Anderson was the top of three PSAC runners in the event, besting Shippensburg's Katrina Spratford and Lara Crofford, who finished eighth and ninth respectively. The race's winner, Rachel Patterson of Grand Valley State, set a new NCAA record with a time of 16:07.28.
Anderson still has time to catch Jennings in All-America finishes as she begins her senior season of outdoor track and field and still has a season of eligibility left in cross country. She has a quick turnaround to the outdoor track and field season, going from Mankato, Minn. to Conrad, SC for next weekend's Shamrock Invitational, Millersville's first competition of the outdoor season.
