Edinboro, Pa. – At Edinboro on day one of the PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday, both Marauder teams competed well, as the men closed out the day ranked fifth and the women head to the second day in sixth as a team. There was a school record broken, as well as an accomplishment that hasn't happened in eight years.
The first day of competition saw the distance runners shine brightest. James McBride won the 5,000-meter run for the men's team and Elicia Anderson was the runner-up in the women's 5,000-meter. McBride won with a time of 14:45.66, which fell short of his career best set last year in the PSAC Championships. McBride's win is a huge accomplishment, as it gave Millersville the the men's program its first individual PSAC Indoor Championship in any event since Dan Ober won the pentathlon in 2003-04. Anderson's second-place time of 17:09.68 was short of her season-best and school-record time of 16:48.08, set earlier in February at the New Balance Invitational.
Another high finish for the Marauders was the men's 4x800-meter relay team, consisting of Andrew Mussleman, Sergey Grinev, Seth Hibbs and Kevin DiFlorio. That foursome put together a third-place finish with a time of 7:56.18, the second-best time in the event in school history.
Also taking third place in her event was Harlee Staller. Her 5.48-meter long jump was three-hundredths of a meter shy of the school record she set in the first meet of the season at Lehigh. Staller's impressive day did not stop in the jumping events. Staller also ran a preliminary time of 7.99 seconds in the 60-meter dash. While the time missed qualifying for finals, it was good enough for the second-best time in the event in school history.
While his event is not finished yet, sophomore sprinter Jeff Robinson had one of the most impressive performances of the day. His 22.19-second dash in the 200-meter preliminaries obliterated teammate Keith Ogden's former school record time of 22.50 seconds. Ogden set the record earlier this season in the Bison Open at Bucknell on Jan. 27. Robinson's time was the second-best among all preliminary competitors.
Other solid performers on the first day for the men's team were Justin Berg and Zach Kohler. Berg tossed a career-best and the fourth-best distance in school history in the weight throw at 14.36 meters. Among throwers, it was also the fourth-best finish in the field. Kohler, competing in the heptathlon, has had a solid showing through the first four events. Although he had a slow start with an 11th place finish in the 60-meter dash, Kohler recovered in the next three events with a fifth-place finish in the long jump and a sixth-place toss in the shot put. The senior saved his best for last, as he tied for first in the high jump with a height of 1.98 meters.
Millersville is back in action at the second and final day of the PSAC Championships tomorrow at Edinboro University.
