Millersville, Pa. – Marauder football head coach Greg Colby has announced the team's post-season awards for the 2011 season. The team hands out eight awards every season. This year's winners were as follows:
The Gene Carpenter Leadership Awards: Greg Frantz (TE), Gary Tillman (SS)
The Carpenter Leadership Awards go to the team captains every season.
Frantz, a senior this past season, was elected as a captain after being an integral part of the Marauders aerial attack in 2009-10 and making the All-PSAC East Second Team for the 2010 season. The two-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete's true leadership shined through in his play this season, as the Marauders transitioned to a ground attack and utilized the Wyndmore native more for his blocking skills.
Tillman was named a team captain after posting 52 tackles, a sack, forced fumble and an interception as a junior in 2010. Tillman followed that performance up by being a leader at one of the most important positions on the field, recording 62 tackles, a sack and three forced fumbles. The Richard Montgomery (Md.) product was named to the All-PSAC East Second Team for his production on the field and leadership on and off the field as well.
The Thomas Burns Black & Gold Award: Kevin Fowle (QB)
The Thomas Burns Black & Gold Award is given to the player who most exemplifies Marauder Pride, dedication and loyalty to his team.
Fowle, a career backup, exemplified dedication to his team. As a senior, he appeared in four games and 10 overall for his career. The Rockville, Md. native provided stability behind the likes of Bill Shirk and Dan Miller. The highlight of Fowle's career came on Nov. 12 against Clarion, when he led the offense onto the field as the starting quarterback on Senior Day.
The John Emswiler Twelfth Man Award: Steve Roberts (RB)
The John Emswiler Twelfth Man Award is presented annually to the player whose spirit and enthusiasm both on and off the field are constant inspiration to his teammates around him.
Roberts made his mark as a special teams ace over his four-year career in Black & Gold. After receiving a redshirt during the 2007 season, Roberts appeared in 39 career games and did not miss a game over the last three seasons, registering a total of 17 special teams tackles. Roberts, like Fowle, was able to lead the Marauder offense onto the field as the starting running back on Senior Day. Throughout his career, the Upper Dublin High School product also contributed within the community, as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Rookie of the Year: Marquis White (RB)
The Rookie of the Year award is given to the best freshman performer on the team.
When the season began, the Marauders didn't know what they had in the Philadelphia native White. After bouncing from running back to cornerback and back to running back again, White found a home on the offensive side of the ball and gave Millersville punch in the ground game. White, who also ran track & field over the winter toted the rock 100 times for 464 yards and six scores and added three catches for 31 yards. The breakout performer of the year had two 100-yard games and has presented the team with a fixture at running back for the coming years.
Offensive MVP: Dan Miller (QB)
Converting from one side of the ball is difficult enough. What makes the switch even tougher is when the player moves to quarterback, the most important position on the field. Miller converted from cornerback in camp and the junior had an impressive season under the circumstances. The Valley Forge Military Junior College-transfer rushed for three touchdowns and passed for five more to go with his 830 passing yards. Miller's two best games were both road performances: at Lock Haven on Sept. 10 and at East Stroudsburg Oct. 22. Against the Bald Eagles, the Pottstown native completed 15-of-28 passes for 134 yards, three touchdowns and an interception while rushing for 32 yards on 10 carries. Playing at East Stroudsburg, Miller connected on 13-of-26 attempts for 115 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and carried the ball 15 times for 76 yards.
Defensive MVP: Pat Maloney (LB)
The Marauders man in the middle of their defense was having a great sophomore season five games in with 53 stops when a shoulder injury sidelined him for the rest of the 2010 season. Maloney bounced back from that injury in a big way, leading the team in total stops with 78. The Havertown native's best game of the season came against Shippensburg Oct. 29, when he stopped the Red Raiders' ball carrier a team-high 11 times including two of those tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. Maloney also led the team in sacks with four and provided a stout presence in the middle of the Millersville defense all season long, making at least five total tackles in each game.
Special Teams MVP: Jeff Lawson (P)
Special teams in football are one of the most important aspects of the game, and the Marauders have stability at one of the key special teams positions. Lawson, a junior at punter, had a solid season. The Newark, Del. product ranked 10th in the PSAC in punting average and tied for third-longest punt of the season in the conference with a 60-yarder. The junior was busy in his duties, as he led the PSAC with 78 punts on the season. Lawson was accurate this season as well. He landed 29 of his 78 punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line, including at least one in each game, against only four touchbacks all season.
The Jay Chryst Loyalty Award: Sandy Guilfoyle
The Jay Chryst Loyalty Award is given to the Millersville football alumnus who has rendered distinguished services to the football program.
Sandy Guilfoyle represents Marauder pride and has constantly given back to the program. A graduate of the Class of 1968 in comprehensive science and biology, the former wide receiver and defensive back has been instrumental in his continued work with the Gene Carpenter Foundation. The Marauders' legendary coach's foundation was created to financially support the Marauder football program. Guilfoyle, who also earned two secondary degrees from Millersville, serves as the primary donation contact for the foundation and contributes to fundraising efforts such as an annual golf outing, a tailgate party, the end-of-season banquet and a phonathon. For all of his work, he deservingly garnered the Jay Chryst Loyalty Award. For more information on the Gene A. Carpenter Foundation, click here.
