Game 2
Winston-Salem, N.C. - Winston-Salem State rallied in its final at bat twice to send Sunday's doubleheaders with Millersville into extra innings. The Marauders, however, were undaunted and battled to win the opener 8-6 in 11 innings and the second game 8-7 in nine.
Millersville (3-1) totaled 20 hits and drew 17 walks in the two games combined.
Mike Perez and
Evan King continued their torrid starts. Perez went 5-for-8 with three walks and three RBIs in the doubleheader. King went 4-for-10 with two runs, and a walk and two steals, improving his stolen base total to 4-for-4.
In game one, the Marauders struck first in the opening inning on a Perez RBI single and built the lead to 5-1 before the Rams scored in the sixth. The Rams added two in the seventh, but Millersville increased the lead to 6-3 in the top of the eighth with a RBI single from King.
The three-run lead went away in a hurry, though. The Rams opened the ninth with back-to-back hits and strung together four hits for three runs to tie the game off of reliever
Jason Long.
That took the decision away from starter
Mike McMonagle, who allowed just one run on three hits through 5.2 innings.
Tyler Horst (1-0) came on in extra innings and kept the Rams scoreless until Millersville could break through in the 11th.
Zach Stone started the rally with a single, and Perez plated him with a double.
Carlos Medina added to the lead with a RBI single.
Winston-Salem struck first in game two. Two Millersville errors in the top of the first opened the door to four runs--three unearned--off of starter
Tad Barton. The Rams' lead grew to 5-0 in the second, but Millersville charged back.
Chris Edgar and Perez recorded RBIs in the third to start the comeback. After a run in the fourth pulled Millersville to within two, it drew six walks and totaled four runs in the fifth to take the lead, 7-5.
In the bottom of the inning, though, the rams capitalized on a Millersville error, and a two-run single sent the game to extras.
Millersville unceremoniously scored the go-ahead run in the ninth when
Tyler McDonald grounded into a double play, which scored Edgar.
Adam Zipko, who made two appearances on the day, came on in the ninth and nailed down the win.
Mark Royer (1-0) earned the win for Millersville by allowing just one earned run and striking out six in six innings. In addition to Perez and King's big games,
Kurt Seiders drove in two runs.
Millersville returns on action on Feb. 24 in the Riverside Spring Classic.
