Baseball Splits Opening Day Doubleheader

Game 1 | Game 2

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The No. 7 Millersville baseball team opened its 2012 campaign Saturday by splitting a doubleheader with Winston-Salem State at BB&T Ballpark. Millersville won the opener 9-5 but fell in game two by a 6-5 final.

The bats appeared to be in mid-season form, scoring 14 runs on 17 hits in the two games. The defense and pitching, especially in game two, was a different story.

Starter Brooks Rothschild (1-0) was outstanding in game one, throwing five shutout innings. He held the Rams (2-5) to just three hits and three walks. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third to keep the game scoreless.

The Marauders got on the board with a four-run fourth. They took advantage of three errors. Carlos Medina drew a bases-loaded walk and Evan King plated a run when he was hit by a pitch.

The Marauders added three more in the fifth and two more in the sixth to run the lead to 9-0. All of the Rams' runs came off of the Millersville bullpen.

Medina drove in two runs and scored twice. King also plated two. Zach Stone and Mike Perez both had two hits and scored twice.

The conditions got nastier throughout the afternoon and in the nightcap, the teams were playing in sub-30 degree temperature. Sophomore starter Tim Mayza and the defense felt the effects.

The Marauders jumped to a quick 3-0 lead, though. King manufactured the first run on his own, drawing a walk, stealing second and swiping third. He scored when the throw to third was wild. Stone drove in Chris Edgar and Mike August with a single.

Millersville built the advantage to 5-1 in the third on a two-run triple from Medina. But that's when things started to unrvavel for the Marauders.

The Rams strung together four hits in the bottom of the inning and tallied four runs off of Mayza, bouncing the starter from the game and tying it at 5-5. In the fourth, Travis Moore singled off of reliever Brian Black (0-1) and stole two bags. Aaron Jones followed with a single, giving the Rams a 6-5 edge.

Millersville put a runner on base in each of the next three innings but couldn't manage a run. Black pitched well in relief, allowing four hits and striking out four, but that one run was enough to give him the loss. Millersville, which led the nation in fielding percentage in 2011, committed four errors.

Adam Satanoff (1-0) picked up his first win by allowing three earned runs and strikng out seven in 5.2 innings. John Markley notched the save.

Stone and Medina finished a strong first day with two more hits and two more RBIs in game two. Stone went 4-for-8 with two RBIs and Medina drove in four runs in the doubleheader. King reached base five times.

Millersville and Winston-Salem State play another doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
