THE STARTING FIVE
(1) Millersville rolls into Pucillo Gymansium Wednesday on a five-game winning streak for the first time since 2008 and boasting its first 2-0 start to PSAC play since the same season. Millersville's 84-57 win over Clarion was the most lopsided road victory since defeating West Chester by 30 in 2008. The 2007-08 team, by the way, reached the NCAA East Regional final. Goldey-Beacom, winners of three of the last five, will try to stop Millersville from winning six in a row for the first time since the 2006-07 team put together eight-straight from Feb. 17-March 11. Millersville is 3-0 at home this season and 84-21 in non-conference home games under
Fred Thompson.
(2) Millersville has recommitted itself on the defensive end after an 0-2 start and the result has been a five-game winning streak. Millersville is 5-0 when holding opponents under 80 and 5-0 when holding teams under 50 percent shooting. The Marauders have held four of the last five opponents under 60 points, and on Saturday, they held Lock Haven scoreless for 4:56 of the five minute overtime. The Marauders rank fourth in the PSAC in scoring defense and fifth in field goal percentage defense. During the current winning streak, the Marauders are holding teams to just 54.2 points per game, 34.0 percent shooting from the field, 27.4 percent shooting from three and have blocked an average of 5.0 shots per game.
(3) After a weekend in which he averaged 19.0 points and 15.0 rebounds per game,
Elijah Obade was named PSAC East Athlete of the Week for the second time this season. Obade's 21 rebounds against Lock Haven matched a previous career-high of 19 that was set just one game earlier. He not only leads the PSAC but all of Division II in rebounding by nearly three per game. His 14.1 average, if maintained, would be the highest by a Marauder since 1965. He leads the PSAC and is 19th in blocks with 2.4 per game. Obade has pulled down at least 13 rebounds in five of seven games and has not had fewer than eight rebounds in any game this season. His four double-doubles is fourth nationally.
(4) Brandon Brown had breakthrough performances against Lock Haven and Clarion. He averaged 13.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals in the two games after scoring just six points in the first five games of the season and 23 in his first 23 games as a Marauder. His 19 points against Lock Haven topped his previous career high by 16 points. He also set highs in rebounds, and steals.
(5) Millersville is in search of its first win over Goldey-Beacom. The clubs have met two times (2009-10 and 2010-11), and both resulted in double-digit victories for the Lightning. Only three Marauders (Obade,
Jaymes Miller and
Anthony Coleman) have played against G-B. Miller, as a freshman, scored 12 points in the last meeting.
