THE STARTING FIVE
(1) Millersville enters the Bellarmine Tournament fresh off of an 11-day break. Before the team went into its holiday break, the Marauders dropped their first game of the season on their home floor to No. 8 Gannon, which is the only team left in the PSAC that boasts an undefeated record in conference play. Following that loss, Millersville got back on its home floor a day later to take on Mercyhurst and posted a 68-53 victory with a strong freshman performance from
Celeste Robinson, who scored a career-high 11 points to tie for the team lead with senior
Mashira Newman.
(2) It was quite the week for senior forward/center
Aurielle Mosley, who won her second PSAC East Athlete of the Week award last Thursday. After capturing her first PSAC award of the season following the first game of the season in which she scored her 1,000th-career point, the captain nabbed another with two brilliant performances despite just the 1-1 record. Mosley averaged a double-double (14.5 points, 10.5 rebounds per game) to provide a strong frontcourt presence. But more importantly, she blocked four total shots in the two games, giving her 201 for her career to break the school's 17-year-old record for blocks in a career. In the second game against Mercyhurst, Mosley also notched her 800th-career rebound. She is just the seventh player in Marauder history to join that exclusive club.
(3) While Mosley has been getting all the accolades from the conference for her achievements, fellow senior backcourt player
Mashira Newman has been just as good in her final campaign donning the Black & Gold. The Marauder point guard is second on the team in scoring at 12.6 points per game and first in assists at 4.0 per game, but has been just as good on the defensive end. Newman has been a thief, ripping away 22 steals so far this season to give her 314 for her career, just the third player in program history to do so. She has also blocked 13 shots to date this season, including a career-high five of them in the overtime loss to Gannon on Dec. 18.
(4) The key for Millersville defensively is 70 points. The only time the Marauders have lost this season, they allowed Gannon to score 78 points as the only opponent to eclipse the 70-point barrier. It did, however, take the Golden Knights an extra five-minute overtime period to reach that figure.
(5) Games against Bellarmine and Missouri S&T will be played in Louisville, Ky. and will be foreign to Millersville. The team has never played either opponent in the program's history, and head coach
Mary Fleig has never met either of the opposing teams in her career.
ABOUT BELLARMINE
Bellarmine has never squared off with Millersville, but has had success as a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), especially this season. The Knights have rebounded from a 13-14 (7-11 GLVC) record a year ago to win eight of their first nine games to open the 2012-13 season. Winners of seven straight contests heading into their own tournament and a date with the Marauders, the Knights have not lost since a Nov. 10 defeat at the hands of Cedarville (Ohio) University, 67-56. Since the loss to Cedarville, Bellarmine has won those seven games in a row by an average margin of victory of 18.4 points per game. What the Knights lack in top-heavy scoring prowess, they more than make up for in scoring. Betsy Goodin boosts a second unit by averaging 11.3 points per game off the bench, but is the team's only double-digit scorer in the entire lineup. Bellarmine does, however, have seven players scoring at least 6.4 points per game. A big part of Bellarmine's rediscovered success can be attributed to Chancellor Dugan, who is in her first year as head coach of the Knights. Dugan took over during the summer and inherits a program that is akin to winning. Bellarmine has made the NCAA Tournament a whopping 14 times since 1986 and has won four regional championships in that time frame.
ABOUT MISSOURI S&T
As with Bellarmine above, the Miners of Missouri S&T also hail from the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) and began their season at 4-3 overall entering this weekend's Bellarmine Tournament in Louisville, Ky. The Miners have been streaky this season and have won three in a row heading into their first game of the weekend against Alabama-Hunstville Sunday before drawing the Marauders on Monday. It was only after Missouri S&T had dropped three straight games that the Miners have gathered steam to collect three straight tallies in the 'W' column. They've won those three games by an average of 14.7 points per game, defeating Westminster (Mo.) College, Drury and Lindenwood in succession. Miners are lead offensively by Hailee Parks, who averages a team-best 15.3 points per game on an efficient 56.9 percent shooting. The senior forward is also the team's best rebounder at a 7.9 per game pace. Backing up Parks in the scoring column is Toni Knar, who is the only other Miner player to average double-figures, with 12.1 points per game. Missouri S&T is as good as its head coach Alan Eads, who is the school's all-time winningest coach at 144 wins to his credit. He is in his 11th season with the Miners and has led the team to winning records in six of its past seven seasons. Last year under his guidance, Missouri S&T finished the year with an 18-9 record.
