Marauders Best Clarion 83-65 To Start Season 4-0

Box Score Clarion, Pa. – The old adage is that road wins are tough to come by. If that is the case, the women's basketball team had a pretty successful weekend, following a win over Lock Haven Saturday with Sunday's 83-65 win over Clarion. The victory gives Millersville its fifth 4-0 start in the past six years.

Carly Gallagher continued her hot shooting, draining four three-pointers and connecting on 8-of-13 overall for a game- and career-high 27 points and chipped in three assists and two steals. Mashira Newman and Aurielle Mosley had 13 points apiece. Newman added five rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals to fill the stat sheet, while Mosley registered five rebounds and four assists.

The Marauders shot an efficient 40.9 percent from the field, making 27-of-66 shots to post a season-high shooting percentage. Millersville held Clarion to just 36.7 percent shooting. In addition, the Golden Eagles shot just 50 percent from the charity stripe on 30 chances.

With the Golden Eagles holding a 27-26 lead with five minutes to go in the first half, the Marauders took off, closing the first half on a 20-7 run to take a 46-34 lead into the locker room. After coming out of the break with a hot start, Millersville saw its lead balloon to 20 points when Gallagher hit a three off a Newman assist to put the score at 66-46.

When Clarion scored 12 straight points to cut the Millersville lead to 66-58, the Marauders responded with a 15-2 run of their own to finish off the Golden Eagles. Newman got the run started with back-to-back layups, and Gallagher capped it with two free throws with just less than two minutes left to give Millersville its biggest lead of the day.

Another important player in Sunday afternoon's win was Miesha Cousins. The senior posted eight points and a team-leading 11 rebounds, including six on the offensive end of the floor. The 11 points were a quarter of the team's 44 total rebounds, but the Marauders were out-rebounded by their opponent for the second-straight game.

Millersville again limited its mistakes, having just 17 turnovers as a team compared to 27 for Clarion. Off those 27 turnovers, the Marauders created 29 points. The road team also controlled the painted area, outscoring the Golden Eagles 36-24 in the lane.

After playing on back-to-back days, Millersville gets a week-long break until the Marauders open PSAC East play on their schedule with a Dec. 8 matchup against Bloomsburg. The Huskies, currently 5-0 and 2-0 in PSAC play, were picked to win the PSAC East in the PSAC Preseason Poll. Millersville has not started a season 5-0 since 2009-10, but owns a 37-36 record all-time against Bloomsburg.
