Box Score Lock Haven, Pa. – In the Marauders' PSAC opener Saturday, the team faced its first deficit of the season, falling behind home standing Lock Haven, 4-0. Thankfully for Millersville, that Bald Eagle lead would be short-lived and would represent the only time the Marauders trailed in the game, as they used a strong second half run to cruise past Lock Haven, 72-49. The win improves Millersville to 3-0 and gives the team its first PSAC win of the year.
At the end of a tough first half where Millersville looked to be heading into the locker rooms up only eight,
Mashira Newman found
Aurielle Mosley behind the three-point arc for one of her three assists as Mosley drained a triple with three seconds left on the clock to close the half. That increased the Marauder lead to 11, but the momentum gained was worth more than the points, as Millersville came out firing in the second stanza.
In the second half, Lock Haven kept the Marauders at arm's length through the first seven-plus minutes of the period. From there, Millersville's surprise player of the year
Senada Mehmedovic, hit for five straight points on a three and a layup to spark a 22-0 run that was capped by an
Alexis Martin layup to give the Marauders a 33-point advantage.
Millersville had three players finish in double figures, with
Carly Gallagher leading the way by scoring a game-high 18 points to tie her career-high on 7-for-12 shooting, including four three-pointers.
Mashira Newman registered 17 points on 50 percent shooting from the field and canned 5-of-8 threes. Led by Gallagher and Newman, who combined for just eight points on 3-for-15 in a win Monday at Philadelphia, the Marauders shot 40.7 percent from deep at Lock Haven.
The other Millersville player to post double-digits in points was Mehmedovic. The conference's leading scorer coming into the game with 21.0 points per game in the first two games of the season, Mehmedovic tallied just 11 against Lock Haven, but shot well enough to go 4-of-9 and make a three-pointer.
Mosley had a solid nine points and seven rebounds and protected the rim well with four of the team's six blocks and three steals. Impact freshman
Celeste Robinson led the team with nine rebounds, chipped in five points, and shared the team lead in assists with Newman at three. The nine rebounds were her most in a game this season.
As has been the case all season for Millersville, the team forced Lock Haven into 29 turnovers, cashing those in for 24 points off turnovers. Even when the Marauders made a mistake, the defense clamped down, as the Bald Eagles turned 22 Millersville turnovers into just four points.
The 3-0 start marks the sixth-straight season the Marauders have achieved that accomplishment. Also, dating to the 2006 season, Millersville has beaten Lock Haven in seven straight meetings, extending head coach
Mary Fleig's career record against the Bald Eagles to 21-5.
Finishing the back end of a two-game PSAC crossover weekend tomorrow at Clarion against the 2-2 Golden Eagles, Millersville has to like its chances due to the fact that the team has gotten to 4-0 five times in the last six seasons. Tip for tomorrow's game between the Marauders and Clarion at Tippin Gym is scheduled for 1 p.m.
