THE STARTING FIVE
1) Different year, same record: the Marauders have now started a season 2-0 under
Mary Fleig for the seventh-straight year after Monday night's win at Philadelphia University, 69-60. If Millersville wins just one game over the weekend, it will most likely be the first game against Lock Haven, although the Bald Eagles present a tougher matchup, as they average 75.0 points per game to Clarion's 64.0 points per game. The Marauders have not lost their third game of the season since they started the 2006-07 season at 2-1, which was the first year in the seven year run of Millersville's teams starting 2-0.
2) If recent history is any indication, Millersville can feel good about its chances at a 4-0 start. In the current seven-season stretch mentioned above, only two times have the Marauders not claimed four-straight wins to start the season. Those two seasons would be the first season of the streak (2006-07) and last year (2011-12), when the team fell to Gannon on its home floor.
3) In the win over Philadelphia Monday, junior
Senada Mehmedovic continued her stellar season play, going off for 27 points while canning six triples. Her 21.0 points per game currently leads the PSAC, and while the two games is a small sample size, the Marauders appear high on nearly every individual statistical category leaderboard. Mehmedovic also leads the conference in three-point shooting of anyone who has at least 10 attempts at a staggering 60 percent. In addition,
Mashira Newman and
Celeste Robinson are tied for fifth in the PSAC in assists per game at 4.5 and rank first (5.0) and third (3.5), respectively, in steals per game.
Aurielle Mosley leads the PSAC with 4.5 blocks per game, and
Yasmin Cooper posts 10.0 rebounds per game, tied for second in the conference.
4) The Marauders eked out a win over Lock Haven in the teams' meeting last season, 57-56. In that game,
Mashira Newman turned in an all-around performance with 19 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and a steal while playing all 40 minutes. Millersville shot 37.7 percent from the field, including 40 percent from three-point range to improve to 5-1 on the season.
5) This weekend's doubleheader is the second time in two years that Millersville has played Clarion and Lock Haven in back-to-back games. Last year, Clarion was first up, and the Marauders took care of the Golden Eagles on their home hardwood, 72-53. Millersville allowed Clarion to shoot just 34.7 percent from the field, and
Aurielle Mosley posted a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds. She led the team in rebounds and tied
Mashira Newman for the team lead in points in that game, as Newman added five assists.
