THE STARTING FIVE
(1) Millersville rallied from an 0-2 start by winning two in a row to even its record. Millersville boosted its record to 138-60 at home and 83-21 in home non-conference games under
Fred Thompson. A key in the two victories was defensive improvement. Millersville an average of 87.0 points and 50.0 percent shooting in its two losses, but held Wilmington and USciences to an average of 43.0 points, 32.3 percent shooting from the field and 20.7 percent shooting from three. The 34 points surrendered to USciences were the fewest since 1950. The 72-48 win was also the Marauders' widest margin of victory since defeating Penn State Harrisburg 116-48 in 2006. Despite holding a 39-70 record since 2008, the Marauders are 22-6 when holding opponents to 65 points of fewer.
(2) Larry Grant leads the PSAC with 26 threes attempted and is shooting an outstanding 42.3 percent from long range. Among players with at least 10 attempts, Grant ranks third in the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage. He's on pace to attempt 175 3-pointers by season's end. He attempted only 82 last year and shot 22.0 percent. Grant ranks fourth in the PSAC in scoring average and leads the league in field goals made. While Grant is drilling threes at a high rate, the rest of the team is 12-for-61 or 19.6 percent. A positive trend is that
Brandon Belt, a 37.2 percent shooter at Gannon last season, made two against USciences, and
Danny Rodriguez made 3-of-4. The team made 10 threes in the game, marking just the eighth time in the last 179 games that it has made double-digit threes in a game.
(3) Millersville is 3-0 all-time against Penn State Harrisburg and 9-3 against all Penn State schools dating back to 1906. Millersville's last loss to a Penn State program came in 1908 to Penn State Mont Alto. All three losses were to the Mont Alto team. Millersville defeated Penn State 25-21 in 1908. Millersville has scored an average of 103.3 points per game against PSU Harrisburg and boasts an average margin of victory of 48.3 points per game.
(4) Elijah Obade has been a dominating presence on the interior this season, averaging at double-double of 14.8 points and 12.5 rebounds. He leads the PSAC in rebounding and is tied for first in total blocks with seven. He has totaled 13 or more rebounds in three of four games. Dating back to last season, Obade has double-digit rebounds in 11 of his last 14 games and has blocked a shot in 12 consecutive games.
(5) Millersville is certainly hoping that
Jaymes Miller and
Anthony Coleman get back on track. The duo averaged 10.7 and 10.8 points per game and shot 52.8 and 51.2 percent respectively. Through four games, Miller is averaging 3.3 points on 37.5 percent shooting and Coleman has dipped to 8.3 points per game on 29.3 percent shooting.
ABOUT PENN STATE HARRISBURG
· Mike Gaffey, a 1986 graduate of Penn State, is in his fifth season as the head coach at Penn State Harrisburg after coaching 16 years of high school basketball. He played his college basketball at Penn State Du Bois. His teams have won back-to-back North Eastern Athletic Conference regular season titles after he took over a club that was an eight-win, last place team in 2008-09. The program led Division III in steals and went 20-7 for its first 20-win season last year. The team has averaged over 80 points per game two seasons in a row, and has finished first in the conference in steals, assists and field goals. The Lions lost the season opener to Division III power Franklin & Marshall 66-37 but bounced back with an 85-77 win over Western Connecticut State. Through two games, William Doyle leads the team with 14.0 points per game while shooting 90.9 percent from the free throw line. Millersville should hold a decided advantage on the glass as Penn State Harrisburg has been outrebounded 46.5-29.0 in two games. A number of the players should be very familiar with Millersville University after playing their high school basketball in Lancaster County. Jordan Gatchell attended Manheim Central and Joey Farthing, Adam Williams and Ethan Strayer all played for Hempfield. The trio contributed to the 2010 and 2011 Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship teams.
