Millersville Tames Tigers, 2-1

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's soccer team happily returned to Chryst Field at Biemsderfer Stadium following two road losses and used a comeback effort in a 2-1 defeat of Holy Family to improve its home record to 3-1-1 on the year.

Quantera Lightner scored her first goal of the season for the Marauders first goal of the game and Megan Kelley tallied her third of the year on the game-winning goal. Millersville (4-7-4) took two more shots than the Tigers and recorded three more corners. Olivia Webber notched six saves in goal for the home team.

Holy Family (5-10) received its only goal from the team scoring leader Megan Tole. Tole and Jenna Richards each had four shots for the Tigers on the day. In the cage, goalkeeper Rachel Dunkle saved 10 shots throughout the contest.

The Tigers struck first when Kimber Kisselback played a centering pass into the box and Holy Family forward Megan Tole poked in the score for the 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. Tole's talley was her eighth of the season.

Unlike Tole and the Tigers, Millersville received a goal from a player who had not scored all year. Lightner collected a deflected pass from Megan Wilson, dribbled to the edge of the box and fired a shot. Lightner placed her strike perfectly as it glanced off the right post in the right upper corner of the goal frame and into the back of the net. Lightner's strike tied the game at the 25:48 mark.

The teams entered halftime at a 1-1 deadlock with Millersville holding a two-shot and three-corner edge.

The Marauders struck again in the 52nd minute to take their first lead at home since defeating Mansfield over a month ago. The team leader in assists, Kelsey Mattola, played a through ball to freshman Megan Kelley. Kelley ran past the defense and found herself in a breakaway opportunity. As Dunkle came out Kelley tapped the ball past her and into the right side of the goal for the eventual game-winning tally.

Millersville had plenty of opportunities to pad the lead throughout the rest of the second period. A header by Erin Kerchner sailed just over the goal frame on a corner. Freshman Emily Purcell had an open shot from 12-yards out but sent her strike over the crossbar. Kelley had two more good chances but each time her target miss wide to the right.

The Marauder defense was able to keep the Tigers off the board even when Tole had a wide open header from 15-yards away. A diving save by Webber stiffled the attempt, and Millersville was able to keep their opponent under two goals for the fourth time in the past five matches.

With the win, head coach Mike O'Brien's squad improves to 3-0-1 against non-conference opponents this season.

Millersville plays three straight PSAC home games to end the season and takes on East Stroudsburg in the first game of that stretch Saturday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m.
