Mike O'Brien

Mike O'Brien

Mike O'Brien finished his ninth season at the helm of the women's soccer program in 2014. O'Brien led the Marauders to their best finish since 2003 with a record of 9-6-2. The 2013 team went 8-9-1 overall and 7-8-1 in the PSAC and started the season 5-0-1, Millersville best start in team history. O'Brien continued his mark of upset victories by defeating Edinboro for the first time since 2003, IUP for the first time since 1998, and Kutztown for just the third time since 2002.

The 2013 squad boasted a plethora of first year players who immediately improved the women's soccer team. Millersville finished with the most wins and best record since 2003. The defense held opponents to the fewest goals allowed (20) in 11 years. O'Brien guided the team to several wins over PSAC opponents and nearly guided the Marauders to their first postseason berth in nearly a decade.

He guided the 2009 Marauders to a 1-0 upset of Shippensburg in their season-finale. The win spoiled Shippensburg's season, as it cost the Red Raiders a spot in the conference tournament. While O'Brien hoped his team's late-season momentum would have come earlier in the campaign, his ladies picked arguably their best win of the season on Senior Night at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. There, O'Brien led his team past Kutztown, 2-1, in double overtime. Kutztown was ranked 14th in the nation at the time.

O'Brien's coaching helped land two of his players on the All-PSAC East Second Team. He has now rostered five all-conference players in his career at Millersville, including three-time all-conference selection Olivia Taylor.

In 2008, the Marauders increased their goal total by 14 and their win total by two. The team was impressive defensively, surrendering just 1.32 goals per game and totaling five shutouts including a 0-0 draw against No. 6-ranked West Chester.

The 2007 squad finished with a 4-12-3 record but finished strong by winning three of its last five games by a combined score of 14-2. The 2006 team went 3-13-2 in O'Brien's first year as head coach at Millersville.

Prior to his appointment at Millersville, O'Brien was an assistant coach and worked with the goalkeepers for Messiah College's women's soccer program. He spent 2002-04 at the Grantham, Pa., school, where his teams experienced national success. Messiah advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship in 2002 and reached the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals in 2003 with his goalkeepers only allowing 14 goals combined.

O'Brien has also coached both boys' and girls' soccer teams at Northern High School in Dillsburg, Pa., and was named the Mid Penn Coach of the Year in 2002 for his work with the girls' team. There he helped to establish middle school soccer programs as well as guidelines and goals for all soccer coaching positions within the district.

He has also worked with the soccer teams at Cedar Cliff High School (1996-1999) and Big Spring High School (1992-1999).

O'Brien earned his bacholer's degree from Shippensburg University in 1994.
