Harborcreek, Pa. - With the PSAC Championships looming in one week, the Millersville men's golf team might just be peaking at the perfect time. On Sunday, the Marauders charged past California (Pa.) with the best round of the day to take first place at the Mercyhurst Fall Invitational. Robert Coyne captured medalist honors as well.
Millersville trailed the Vulcans by four strokes following the first round. Millersville shot an impressive team score of 294 on the 7,108-yard Downing Golf Course to finish three shots ahead of the Vulcans. Millersville also held off a hard-charging West Chester and Indiana (Pa.), which shot rounds of 296 and 295 respectively.
Millersville has now won three team titles in its last nine events.
Coyne paved the way for the Marauders, winning his first career tournament title and delivering his third top-10 in four fall events. It is the second time in the last eight tournaments dating to last spring that a Marauder has won the individual title.
Coyne backed up his first-round 69 with a 1-under-par 71 to finish at 4-under for the tournament, and besting runner-up Brian Bir by four strokes. Coyne's two-day, 140 total was the lowest since Darryn DeShong also shot a 140--a par-71 track-- in April of 2009.
Newcomer Kevin Davis fired a career-best 72 in the second round to move into a tie for ninth with a two-day total of 148. Chris Fieger also moved up the leaderboard and placed in a tie for 17th after shooting 2-over-par in round two and finishing at 6-over-par for the tournament.
Matt Lutz's 8-over-par total placed him in a tie for 26th. Conor Gilbert tied for 42nd at 12-over-par.
The Marauders hope to carry the momentum into the conference championships held at Hershey Links in Hummelstown, Pa., on Oct. 20-21. Millersville has won three league titles since 1999, but the last crown came in 2005.
