Philadelphia, Pa. – After a four-match losing skid the Philadelphia University, which hadn't beaten Millersville since the 2009 season, seemed to be just what the Marauders needed. The Rams, however, proved too tough for the Marauders Wednesday, winning by a 3-1 score to drop the visitors to 7-13 on the season.
The Rams topped Millersville on their home floor by winning the first, second and fourth sets. Philadelphia took the first set by the narrowest set margin of the match, 25-22. The Marauders were put in a 0-2 hole after losing the second set by a score of 25-20. Millersville rallied to win the third set by the widest margin of the match, claiming a 25-15 victory. From there, the Rams took over and improved their record to 13-6 by finishing off the Marauders in the fourth and final set with a 25-18 victory.
Philadelphia's defense deserves much of the credit for the Marauder loss. The Rams limited Millersville to a .051 hitting percentage, blocking 12 kill attempts and digging out 55 more as a team. Even in the third set and only Marauder win of the match, Millersville's offensive attack was stifled to the tune of a .154 attack percentage. The Marauders did have their chances, however, but errors doomed the team. Millersville committed 58 hitting errors in the match.
For the Marauder offense, the team had 46 kills against 38 errors on 156 attempts and six service aces. Katie Lesinski turned in a match-high 12 kills on 37 attempts, compiling a hitting percentage of .135. Samantha Agostini had the most efficient performance up front for Millersville, knocking down six kills and hitting at a .235 clip.
The best effort of the night for the Marauders came from Jessica Franz, who tallied her sixth double-double of the season with a 36 assist and 10 dig showing. Franz had match-highs in assists and service aces, tallying three in that category.
Despite a shaky offensive performance, the Millersville defense came to play in this match. The Marauders blocked nine kill attempts and dug out 63 more as a team, holding the Rams to a .106 attack percentage and forcing Philadelphia into 37 errors. Brooklyn Smith dug out a match-high 19 kill attempts, and Agostini assisted on six Millersville blocks to pace the Marauders.
Millersville will have to have a short memory after Wednesday night's match with PSAC East-leading Lock Haven invading Pucillo Gymnasium Friday night. The Bald Eagles are 12-8 overall, but 7-2 in conference play. The Marauders are 8-22 all-time against Lock Haven and haven't beaten their PSAC East foe since a 3-1 win in the 1995 season.
