Marauders Find Separation in Second Half to Torch Mansfield

Box Score Mansfield, Pa. – The Millersville women's basketball team struggled early but found its groove and outscored Mansfield 43-26 in the second half for a convincing 71-59 victory Saturday at Decker Gymnasium.

The Marauders (12-6, 9-5 PSAC) trailed 33-28 at the half after shooting just 31 percent from the field. Defense kept the Marauders in the game as they created 10 turnovers in the first half.

Mansfield (7-11, 4-10 PSAC) was able to maintain its first half lead thanks to 12 points from the free throw line to Millersville's four.

Millersville opened the second half on a 9-0 run to take its first lead of the game just three minutes into the period. The Mountaineers hit their first bucket five minutes into the half giving the Marauders a 37-35 lead. Mansfield missed its first seven shots of the half.

The Marauders went on a 25-7 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half to push their lead to 53-40. Aurielle Mosley led the charge with 13 of her 22 points in the second half. Mosley finished the game with 11 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season and 30th of her career. Mosley also hit a career best two 3-pointers and added three blocks.

Mansfield shot just 28 percent in the second half while the Marauders knocked down 50 percent of their own attempts. Millersville took its largest lead at 71-55 with 30 seconds remaining before the Mountaineers caused two quick turnovers to cut it down to the eventual final score, 71-59.

Senior Sophia Waters, coming off the bench for the second straight game, had a career day from the field. Waters finished with 18 points, nine in each half, while making a career-high 8-of-13 shots. Waters also finished with a team and season-high four steals.

Redshirt junior Mashira Newman entered today's game just 31 points away from 1,000. Newman struggled in the first half going 1-of-8. In the second half it was a different story. Newman became more aggressive, earning four trips to the free throw line and made 5-of-8.  Newman hit 4-of-7 shots in the second half to finish with 14 points and a tied her season-high eight assists. Newman is now 17 points away from 1,000 career points.

Mansfield took its largest lead of the game with 7:54 remaining in the first by a score of 21-12. Reigning PSAC East Player of the Week Mallory Moore led the Mountaineers with 13 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 23 points. Moore became the second leading scorer in Mansfield women's basketball history.

Head Coach Mary Fleig is now 42-2 all-time against Mansfield and has won 10 straight against the Mountaineers.

Millersville hosts PSAC East rival Bloomsburg on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Pucillo Gymnasium. The Marauders are just one game out of first place in the East with a 9-5 record.
