Shooting Struggles Doom Marauders at Kutztown

Box Score Kutztown, Pa. – Millersville brought Kutztown's lead down to five points twice late in the second half, but the Marauders' struggles from the field proved to be too much to overcome in their 63-57 loss to Kutztown at Keystone Hall on Saturday.

Kutztown (6-12, 4-8 PSAC) and Millersville (10-6, 7-5 PSAC) played an even opening 10 minutes until the Golden Bears went on 10-0 run  to take a 19-9 lead. Kutztown pushed its lead to 29-20 before Mashira Newman hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the half to cut the Golden Bears' lead to six, down 29-23 at the break.

The Marauders struggled from the field in the first half shooting just 9-of-31 while Kutztown shot 43 percent.

The Golden Bears opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at 39-25. Kutztown kept a comfortable lead for much of the second half until Millersville's Newman brought the Marauders within five points--down 50-45 with 6:02 remaining.

Millersville then missed four-consecutive 3-pointers to let the Golden Bears jump back out to a 55-45 lead. Their lead didn't last long falling quickly to just a 55-51 lead after the Marauders hit a three and made three foul shots with 2:05 remaining.

Kutztown's Andrea Sisson hit a countering three in the next possession with 1:58 remaining and that seemed to deflate the Millersville comeback. The Golden Bears jumped back out to a 12-point lead, up 63-51, before the Marauders hit two late three, including one by Gabrielle Styles at the buzzer to give Kutztown a 63-57 win.

Newman finished with a game-high 15 points and five assists. Ten of her points came in the final eight minutes of the second half. Carly Gallagher also finished in double-figures for the Marauders with 10 points. Three of Millersville starting five finished the game with a combined seven-of-41 from the field, which contributed to the Marauders' season-low 28-percent from the field.

Millersville returns home on Wednesday, Jan. 25 when it hosts Shippensburg at 6 p.m.
