Football's Early Lead Doesn't Hold Up Against No. 4 Huskies

Box Score

Bloomsburg, Pa. - Dan Miller's second quarter touchdown run put Millersville ahead of No. 4 Bloomsburg Saturday. The Huskies, however, immediately answered with one of Eddie Mateo's three touchdown runs and went on to run off 40 unanswered points for a 46-7 win.

Millersville (1-3) held a potent Bloomsburg (4-0) running attack in check through the first two drives, limiting the Huskies to a pair of Dan Fisher field goals. Trailing 6-0 with 10:40 left in the second quarter, Millersville started a 12-play, 68-yard drive that ate up 5:41 on the clock. It was all Miller and Mike Jones. Jones rushed six times for 24 yards on the Drive, Miller ran four times and also completed passes to Jones and Lou Brown.

Jones carried the ball to the Bloomsburg one, and Miller reached across the goal line one play later on a quarterback keeper. The extra point placed Millersville in front by a 7-6 score.

Bloomsburg wasted no time regaining the lead. After a short completion from Pat Carey to Kyle Fisher, Mateo ripped off carries of 30, 16 and 19 yards. The third carry reached the end zone. The drive covered 74 yards on four players and lasted just 1:39.

A Marauder three-and-out on the next possession gave Bloomsburg outstanding field position at their own 49 yard line. Carey completed three passes to  reach Millersville's 23 with 10 seconds left. On the next play, Carey lofted a jump ball into the right corner of the end zone where Millersville's Marquis White batted the pass. But Tyler Guise was in perfect position to catch the deflection has he fell backwards out of the end zone. The circus catch gave Bloomsburg a 19-7 lead going into the half.

The Marauder defense rallied behind a Zack Riley sack of Carey to force a three-and-out on Bloomsburg's first possession of the second half. The offenses' next two drives fizzled, however, and Mateo sparked another scoring drive that included a 34-yard run.

Trailing 26-7 after three quarters, the failed to make a dent in the deficit, and Bloomsburg poured in on in the fourth. It scored 20 points including a D.J. Robinson 70-yard punt return for a touchdown.

The Huskies finished with 498 yards of total offense including 322 on the ground. Mateo totaled 201 and averaged 7.4 yards per carry. Led by Jones' 88 yards on 21 carries, Millersville finished with 199 yards of offense. It marked the third time in four games Millersville failed to reach 200 yards of total offense.

The Marauder defense was led by Daniel Jones, who totaled eight tackles and two tackles for loss.
