Box Score
Johnstown, Pa. - It was a long, strange day at Point Stadium, and Indiana (Pa.), the last team in from the PSAC West, capped it by knocking off top-seeded Millersville 6-5. Millersville now faces a quick turnaround as it plays Slippery Rock Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
IUP (20-27) was one of three lower-seeded teams to win on the opening day of the conference playoffs. Mercyhurst was the only higher seeded team to win and it needed 11 innings to top East Stroudsburg. Just two weeks ago, Millersville swept a doubleheader from the Crimson Hawks, but IUP drew first blood in the first inning of Wednesday's game and piled on five runs in the sixth to put the Marauders (37-9) in a deep hole.
Millersville rallied with three in the seventh on a two-run single from Carlos Medina and a run-scoring single from Ryan Chesler. That gave the Marauders life. Adam Zipko, who tossed three innings in relief, kept IUP off the board and Millersville within three runs.
In the ninth, Mike August led off with an infield single. He advanced to second on a fielder's choice, and Chesler came through with ripped double down the line. IUP reliever Ben Weimer escaped the jam, though.
The Marauders not only stranded the tying run on base, but left 13 on base in the game. The top fielding team in Division II also committed two errors for the first time in 12 games.
Chesler totaled three hits, Chris Edgar, Derek Kline and August each had two. Kline was solid on the mound through five but left the bases loaded for Jason Long in the sixth. Long gave up a bases clearing double and a sacrifice fly. Four of the runs in the inning were tagged to Kline.
Greg Stewart (5-3) did not allow an earned run in five innings for the Crimson Hawks.
Slippery Rock was upset by Bloomsburg 11-6. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The game can be heard on MSBN.
