Chesler's Walk-Off Homer Propels Marauders to Sweep of Bloomsburg

Game 1 | Game 2

Millersville, Pa. - The 12th-ranked Millersville baseball team trailed visiting Bloomsburg 4-0 early in game one. But a late rally capped by Ryan Chesler's walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the eighth and a complete game effort from pitcher Brooks Rothschild in game two lifted the Marauders to a sweep of the Huskies.

Chesler's heroics gave Millersville (22-6, 9-3 PSAC East) a 6-5 win, and the Marauders cruised to a 7-2 triumph in the nightcap. Early, though, it looked as if it was going to be a rough day for the home team.

Bloomsburg scored three in the second and one more in the third off starter Derek Kline, but Millersville crept within two in the fourth on a RBI single from Corey Phelan and a RBI double from Chesler. The turning point of the game, though, came in the sixth. With Bloomsburg leading 4-2 and threatening with a runner on third, Howie Deemer lifted a high fly to right field. Phelan made the grab for the second out and fired home to Chesler, who slapped the tag on Vince Smarrelli, ending the inning and saving a run.

The defensive play propeled the Marauders in the bottom of the inning as they rallied for three runs on four hits. Chris Edgar's two-out, bases-loaded single push Millersville in front, 5-4. Bloomsburg was one out away from a loss in the seventh, but Brad Smith singled in a run to tie the game.

Millersville failed to win it in the seventh, but Jason Long (1-0) worked a perfect eighth to preserve the 5-5 tie.

Chesler led off the eighth, and he sent the first pitch from Matt Kline (0-3) off the scoreboard in left-center field.

It was Chesler's third home run of the season and his second RBI of the game. Ryan McCormick also drove in a run and stole his PSAC-leading 21st base of the year. Zach Stone ripped two singles.

Bloomsburg bounced back quickly, though, taking a 1-0 lead off Brooks Rothschild (6-1) in the top of the first in game two. The Marauders trailed until a five-run third that included a two-run single from Edgar, a RBI double from Kline and a Carlos Medina RBI single.

Jeff Heisey tripled in a run, and Edgar collected his third RBI of the game and fifth of the day with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, giving the Marauders a 7-1 advantage.

The lead was plenty for Rothschild, who won his conference-best sixth game. He tossed his fourth complete game of the year, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out five Huskies.

Edgar went 2-for-2 and drew a walk to complete an impressive afternoon in which he went 4-for-6 with five RBIs. McCormick, who totaled two hits in game one, reached base three times in game two. He walked once and was twice hit by a pitch.

Millersville travels to Bloomsburg for a PSAC East doubleheader Sunday. First pitch is 1 p.m. Millersville also heads to Mansfield for a pair on Tuesday, and then returns home on Wednesday for a doubleheader with Indiana (Pa.).
