Marauders Cap Regular Season with Sweep of ESU

Game 1 | Game 2

East Strousburg, Pa. - No. 9 Millersville clinched the PSAC East title on Friday, and there was no letdown Saturday at East Stroudsburg. Mike McMonagle gave the Marauders their third straight complete game shutout in a 2-0 game one victory, and the bats delivered a 5-4 win in game two.

The Marauders closed the regular season with a 37-8 overall record and a 19-5 mark in the PSAC East. It is the second-best division record in Millersville history, topped only by the 20-4 record in 2000.

The script for Millersville all season has been stellar pitching and timely hitting. It was followed again Saturday. McMonagle (6-1) mimicked Friday's starters Derek Kline and Brooks Rothschild with seven shutout innings. He surrendered only six hits and did not walk a batter. He also struck out three.

ESU starter Ryan Beck (0-4) matched McMonagle pitch-for-pitch through three, but in the fourth, Mike August led off with a single, and Corey Phelan walked. Ryan Chesler drove in both with a double. The 2-0 lead held up thanks to McMonagle.

Seven different Marauders recorded a hit. Chris Edgar, Derek Kline, Zach Stone and Chesler all doubled.

Millersville started quickly in game two, scoring three runs in the first two innings. Ryan McCormick reached in the first after being hit by a pitch. He then stole his league-leading 28th base of the year. After moving over to third, Kline pushed him across with a sacrifice fly.

In the second, Phelan led off with a double. Mike Perez drove him in with a RBI single, and Nick Bonadies later scored on an ESU error. Jeff Heisey picked up a RBI in the fourth to boost Millersville's lead to 4-0. Kline collected his second RBI of the day and 143rd of his career with a double in the sixth. Kline now sits one RBI behind Matt Knox as Millersville's career leader. His two doubles--the 55th and 56th of his career--also placed him in a tie for first all-time with Ryan Brink.

Starter Tim Mayza (5-3) coasted through the first five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth. ESU rallied for three runs off of the freshman and picked up one more off of reliever Jason Long.

The Marauders called on closer Zach Eckley in the seventh. The senior converted his conference-best seventh save in seven chances. Millersville improved to 35-0 when leading after six innings this season.
With three runs in the first two innings of game two, Millersville has outscored opponents 107-33 in the first two innings of games.

Millersville now turns in attention toward its first PSAC Tournament since 2008. The Marauders' opening game opponent is Indiana (Pa.) after it salvaged a split with California (Pa.) Saturday to clinch the No. 4 seed from the Western Division. Postseason play begins at Point Stadium in Johnstown, Pa. on May 11.
