Millersville, Pa. – After serving at the helm of the women's lacrosse bench for 33 years, Millersville head coach Barb Waltman has announced her retirement after completion of the 2011 season.
Waltman made her final appearance on the sidelines Thursday when her club matched up with Shippensburg—fittingly coached by Millersville alum Mia Hall '07.
To honor Coach Waltman's achievements throughout her 33 years, the Millersville University Athletic Department will honor her with a retirement luncheon on Sunday, May 15. The event will be held in the Lehr Dining Room at Gordinier on the Millersville Campus, from 1:00 – 3:30 p.m.
The lunch buffet meal includes sandwiches, salads, desserts and beverages. Anyone is welcome to attend, and reservations must be sent to Donna Bazow by Monday, May 9. Donna can be reached by phone at (717) 872-3402, or by email at dbazow@millersville.edu.
Waltman ended her career on Thursday as the longest-tenured coach in Division II women's lacrosse and as the all-time wins leader at Millersville. With 217 career victories, Waltman retires with more wins than any other coach in Division II history. She is also the 15th winningest lacrosse coach ever.
When Waltman took over as head coach, the Marauder women's lacrosse team was just a 13-year old program. Waltman's dedication and hard work truly built the program up and guided it to enormous success.
She guided Millersville to 14 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoff appearances and three PSAC Championships. Waltman also led her 1982 club to become the AIAW Division II National Champions, which remains the only national title for women's athletics at Millersville.
In the fall of 2010 her 1982 National Championship team was enshrined in the Millersville Athletic Hall of Fame, and is just the second team ever inducted.
Waltman is a three-time winner of the Brine/TWLCA Division II Coach of the Year Award. She has also twice been named PSAC Coach of the Year, in 1989 and 1991.
In addition to serving as the head lacrosse coach for the Marauders, Waltman also served as an assistant women's basketball coach from 1977-95. She served as the head women's tennis coach from 1985-91 and was the assistant women's volleyball coach from 1992-2000.
Coach Waltman is a 1973 graduate of Millersville, and played basketball and lacrosse for the Marauders. Her presence on and off the lacrosse field will truly be missed, but her memories and achievements will remain at Millersville forever.
