MSBN's Call of Kline's Sixth-Inning Home Run
Millersville, Pa. - Millersville, the No. 1 ranked team in the NCAA Atlantic Region, tangled with Wilmington, the No. 1 team in the NCAA East Region, Thursday at Marauder Park. Millersville won the battle of top-ranked teams by scores of 5-3 and 10-7.
With the sweep, No. 17 Millersville improved to 30-8 overall and clinched its first 30-win season since 2001. No. 24 Wilmington (31-6) dropped consecutive games for the first time this season.
The Marauders needed some heroics from senior
Derek Kline in the opener. Trailing 3-2 in the sixth, the Marauders received a leadoff walk from
Chris Edgar. Kline then crushed the first pitch from Jason Jutson (3-1) deep over the left field wall, giving Millersville a 4-3 advantage. It was Kline's third RBI of the game, putting his career total at 141--just three shy of tying Matt Knox's school record.
Carlos Medina kept the rally alive with a walk, and pinch runner
Dan Johnson moved into scoring position on a passed ball.
Mike August doubled into left center field, boosting Millersville's lead to 5-3.
Starter
Brooks Rothschild (7-1) worked into the seventh but walked the first batter of the inning. Closer
Zach Eckley came on and retired the side for his fifth save of the year. Rothschild allowed three runs--two earned--on seven hits and four walks in six innings.
Millersville took much of the drama early in game two by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the second. The Marauders sent 13 batters to the dish and ripped six hits in the inning.
Wilmington closed the gap with four runs off of starter
Tad Barton in the top of the third, but Millersville answered with three more in the bottom of the frame. The commanding 10-3 lead was more than enough for relievers
Adam Zipko (2-1) and
Jason Long. Zipko worked two innings and Long picked up his first save by pitching a pair of scoreless frames.
Ryan McCormick and
Chris Edgar led the way at the plate. McCormick went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and his team-leading 25th stolen base of the year. Edgar went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Kline and August added two more hits as well. August and Stone both drove in two runs.
Millersville travels to Philadelphia Friday for a nine inning contest. First pitch is 1 p.m.
