Marauders Power Past Kutztown

Game 1 | Game 2

Kutztown, Pa. - The 20th-ranked Millersville baseball team scored early and often Saturday at Kutztown and powered its way to a sweep over its PSAC Eastern Division foes by scores of 6-1 and 11-5.

With the sweep, Millersville improved to 19-5 overall and 5-2 in league play. While the wins came, the Marauder bats had produced more than six runs just once in its previous 10 games. That trend ended in a hurry Saturday as the Marauders scored a run in each of the first four innings of game one and then pounded out 10 runs in the first two frames of game two.

Millersville was especially effective in two out situations in the opener. Carlos Medina pushed the Marauders in front with a two-out RBI single in the first. Jeff Heisey and Mike August did the same in the following two innings, and in the fourth, it was Ryan McCormick's turn, plating Corey Phelan on a fielder's choice.

As the lead grew, starter Derek Kline (4-1) locked in. He gave up one run in the first but managed to escape a bases loaded jam. After allowing a leadoff single in the second, he mowed through 11 consecutive batters before Kutztown (14-10, 4-6 PSAC East) managed a single in the fifth.

Ryan Chesler built Millersville's lead to 5-1 with a RBI double in the sixth, and McCormick drove in one more for some extra breathing room. Kline stranded two Kutztown runners in the bottom of the inning and breezed through the seventh for his fourth win of the year.

In a complete game effort, Kline scattered three hits and four walks while striking out three. The only run he allowed was unearned. Kutztown's Jonathan Grosse (2-3) took the loss after giving up six runs--four earned--on nine hits in six innings.

Millersville wasted no time getting started in the nightcap. The first five batters reached base, and by the time Zach Stone came to the plate, Millersville was in front 2-0 and had the bases loaded. Stone belted a grand slam to put the Marauders in front by six.

Kutztown put up three against starter Brooks Rothschild (5-1) in the bottom of the inning, but Millersville answered with four more in the second. Stone collected his fifth and sixth RBIs of the game on a double and later scored on a wild pitch. Phelan tacked on a run with a sac fly.

The 10-3 lead was plenty, but Chesler added to it in the fourth with a solo homer--his second of the year.
Millersville finished with 11 hits. Stone, Phelan, Chesler and Kline each totaled two. Kline's pair of singles moved him past Mike Wokulich (1999-2002) for second place on Millersville's career hits list. He now stands just 10 hits shy of passing Ryan Brink (1997-2000) for first all-time.

Rothschild went the full seven for his team-high third complete game. He gave up five runs on eight hits but struck out a season-best eight and walked only one. Trevor Rosenberg (1-2) took the loss for Kutztown after giving up 10 on eight hits and five walks in two innings.

The two clubs meet at Marauder Park Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans can follow the action on live stats and listen live on MSBN.
