Millersville, Pa. - Jon Shehan has coached his Marauders to a national ranking, but it was his actions toward players of another team that prompted Millersville University President Francine G. McNairy to recognize him with the Living the Promise Award.
The Living the Promise award recognizes Millersville students, faculty and staff whose work and life exemplify the University identity, and who live the promise that “Millersville University offers an educational opportunity that is second to none.”
Shehan, a 2006 graduate of Millersville, and in his fourth year as the head coach of the baseball program, was quick to respond when two members of the North Georgia baseball team collided in the outfield during the season-opening series.
Trailing by three runs, Millersville was in the midst of a rally late in the game when a fly ball was hit to shallow left field. The North Georgia third baseman and left fielder, both racing for the ball, collided. According to North Georgia coach Tom Cantrell, Shehan immediately left his third base coaching post and sprinted to the outfield to check on the players, forsaking the direction of his own base runners.
In a letter to athletic administrators, Cantrell wrote, "For Jon to ignore his baserunners to go help our players is one class act and something in this day and age may never happen again."
"This is an award we've given periodically to students, faculty or staff when they've done something extra special that says they are really class act," said McNairy.
Shehan received the honor from McNairy and Vice President of Student Affairs Aminta Breaux.
