Game 2
Bloomsburg, Pa. - All the talk in college baseball circles this year is how the new bat rules have hurt offensive performance. It didn't affect
Corey Phelan on Sunday. The Millersville senior slammed two home runs and drove in all four of Millersville's runs in a 4-3 win over Bloomsburg. The homestanding Huskies bounced back in game two, though, and handed Millersville a 2-0 loss.
Phelan, who owns a career average of .300, entered the weekend mired in a season-long slump. He showed signs of breaking out of it Saturday with two hits and two runs scored. Sunday, he stroked two, two-run homers in his first two at bats. It was all the offense the 12th-ranked Marauders managed in the game, but it was enough.
Starter
Mike McMonagle (4-1) stymied the Huskies through the first six innings, and with a 4-0 lead in the seventh, he was on the verge of his first shutout. He retired the first batter and struck out the second, but the ball squirted away and the batter reached first base. After a walk, Keith Myer ripped a three-run home run to pull the Huskies to within one.
McMonagle turned the ball over to
Zach Eckley. Eckley surrendered a single to Brad Smith, but retired the next two batters to register his PSAC-leading fourth save of the season.
Phelan recorded a hit and drew a walk in game two, but the Marauders totaled only four hits in the game and was shutout for just the second time this season. Kyle Hunter (2-1) pitched a complete game for the Huskies, striking out seven and walking two.
Freshman
Tim Mayza (3-2) was outstanding as well. He went the distance and struck out eight while surrendering just three hits and one walk. But Bloomsburg scored on a squeeze play in the first and received a solo homer from Jerry Lloyd in the sixth.
Zach Stone led off the seventh with a double and Phelan walked to put the go-ahead run at the plate. That's where the rally stopped, though, as Hunter enduced a double play to end the game.
Now 23-7 overall and 10-4 in the PSAC East, Millersville faces a key week on the schedule. On Tuesday, it travels to front-running Mansfield for a rescheduled doubleheader. The Marauders then host Indiana (Pa.) on Wednesday before its four-game weekend series with fellow contender Shippensburg.
