Wingate, N.C. - It was only a matter of time before
Ryan Chesler started hitting. The sophomore catcher broke out of his slump in a big way Tuesday by recording three hits and sparking Millersville to a 10-4 win over Wingate and its seventh in a row.
Chesler, who hit over .300 as a redshirt freshman last year, entered the game with two hits in 23 at bats. He drove in three runs and scored twice to go with his three singles. He helped the Marauders break the game open in the second inning by driving in a pair with the first of his two RBI singles.
Millersville (8-2), took full advantage of Wingate's (15-10) early errors. The Bulldogs allowed the first two batters of the second inning to reach base because of an error, and
Nick Bonadies made them pay with an RBI single. Chesler's RBI single came next, and
Ryan McCormick drove in another. Millersville added a run on another Wingate error, capping a five-run inning that included four Wingate miscues.
Wingate got two back in the bottom of the inning off Millersville starter
Brian Black. The Bulldogs closed the gap to 5-3 with another run in the fourth. But
Mike August drove in a run in the seventh,
Chris Edgar plated one in the eighth, and the Marauders scored two more on four hits in the top of the ninth.
Black turned in a solid effort in his first career starting, tossing four innings and allowing three runs--only one earned.
Tad Barton (1-0) came on in relief and threw three shutout innings. He escaped a bases loaded jam in the seventh as well.
Jason Long worked the final two innings for the Marauders, allowing one run.
Chesler's three hits were matched by Edgar, who also totaled three hits and scored twice.
Zach Stone drove in a run and scored once. August extended his hitting streak 10 games. It was the seventh time in 10 games that Millersville scored at least seven runs.
Wingate totaled 10 hits but committed six errors. Ben Currie (0-4) was victimized by four of them. He allowed seven runs on six hits in six innings, but only three of the runs were earned.
