Game 2
Millersville, Pa. - After a pair of emotional victories at West Chester Saturday, the Millersville baseball team had to guard against a letdown Sunday versus non-conference foe University of the Sciences. The Marauders responded to a sluggish start by rallying for a 10-6 win in the opener.
Tad Barton set the tone for the Marauders in game two, and they squeaked out a 3-0 win to complete the sweep.
Millersville (16-4) has now won eight of its last nine games and 15 of the last 17. The program also improved to 8-0 all-time against USciences (3-9). The visiting Devils made the Marauders earn the wins, though.
USciences started the doublheader with three-straight hits off starter
Brian Black. By the end of the half inning, the Devils led 3-0. Millersville closed the gap in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single from
Derek Kline and a RBI double from
Mike August. But in the top of the second, USciences singled twice more and scored a pair on two Black throwing errors.
Trailing 5-2, Millersville needed a rally. It came in the third. The slumping
Corey Phelan ripped a single up the middle that scored August. That hit seemed to jump-start the Marauder offense as it went on to score five runs on five hits and take a 7-5 lead.
Reliever
Adam Zipko (1-1) turned in an outstanding effort from the bullpen. He entered in the third and pitched four innings, allowing just two hits and one unearned run while fanning three. Millersville pulled away with three runs in the fifth, and
Walter Bishop took care of the Devils with a perfect seventh.
Millersville finished the game with 13 hits.
Ryan McCormick went 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.
Chris Edgar also went 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in two runs. Kline plated three on two hits. August led the hit parade with three. Two of those hits were doubles.
Game two was all about Millersville's pitching. Freshman
Tad Barton owned the USciences lineup through four innings. He retired the first 10 batters he faced and allowed only two bases runners without giving up a hit in four innings.
Bobby Sunkel entered in the fifth and pitched a pair of scoreless frames allowing just one hit--UScience's first and only one of the game.
Millersville received an RBI single from
Carlos Medina in the first, but did not score again until Phelan came through in the fourth. His RBI single plated
Zach Stone, and Phelan pushed Millersville's lead to three in the sixth with a sacrifice fly.
Zach Eckley was called on to close out the game. After issuing a walk to the first batter, Eckley sat down the next three batters in order to convert his third save in as many days.
McCormick, the team's leadoff hitter, walked twice, stole two bases and scored once. Stone also scored twice and reached base on a hit and two walks.
After playing six games in three days, Millersville receives a much-deserved break. It returns to action on Friday, March 25 at Mansfield.
