Game 2
West Chester, Pa. - Entering Saturday's PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader, Millersville had not taken a season series from West Chester since 2001. But riding the arms of two pitchers who had never before made a conference start, Millersville swept the homestanding Golden Rams by scores of 3-2 and 4-2.
Millersville (14-4, 3-1 PSAC East) bounced back quickly following a 4-0 loss to West Chester (6-10, 1-3 PSAC East) in game two of the four-game series. West Chester, perennial favorites in the division, had dominated the series over the last decade, even taking the first 10 games against Coach
Jon Shehan. But since last year, the Marauders have won four of six.
On Saturday, the Marauders used the winning combination of dominating starting pitching and manufactured offense.
Mike McMonagle (2-1), who was making just the third start of his career and his second since 2008, pitched arguably his best outing in the opener. He surrendered only one run on two hits and two walks and struck out eight in five innings. Mayza (3-0), a freshman making his conference debut, took the ball in game two and went the distance, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks.
The Millersville bats didn't light up the scoreboard but did just enough. The Marauders built a 3-0 lead in game one, starting in the third inning.
Ryan McCormick, a West Chester native, walked and then swiped second and third base.
Chris Edgar brought McCormick home with an RBI single. In the fourth,
Carlos Medina led off with a walk and
Mike August doubled. Medina, standing 90 feet away, scored on a
Ryan Chesler sacrifice fly.
Jeff Heisey led off the fifth with a triple, and McCormik immediately followed with a RBI double. That capped the scoring for Millersville, leaving it all up to the pitching staff.
West Chester scored its first run in the sixth when Kristian von Kiel drew a bases loaded walk. Reliever
Jason Long, who escaped a similar jam on Friday, picked up the first out of the inning when
Zach Stone fielded a Matt Baer ground ball and forced Joe Wendle at home. Long then fielded a ground ball off the bat of Josh Heyne and fired home to get the second out. With the bases still loaded, Long struck out Chris Pula, stranding three Golden Rams.
Nursing a 3-1 lead, Zack Eckley entered to close the game in the seventh. He surrendered a run on two hits, but got von Kiel to fly out for his second save in as many days.
Millersville drew first blood against in game two. McCormick set the table with a leadoff walk and later scored on a West Chester error. West Chester evened the score in the bottom of the inning, but the Marauders came right back with two runs in the second. McCormick drove in a run with a RBI fielder's choice, and Edgar plated
Corey Phelan with a sacrifice fly.
West Chester pulled within 3-2 in the bottom of the third, but Mayza stopped the rally in its tracks. He allowed three hits over the final four innings but only one Golden Ram reached scoring position. Millersville added some insurance in the fifth when August doubled home
Derek Kline.
Millersville totaled five hits in each game and no player had more than one hit in each. McCormick reached base four times in the two games.
The Marauders complete a busy weekend tomorrow at Marauder Park. They host a doubleheader with University of the Sciences at 12 p.m.
