Millersville, Pa. – Fueled by a 21-10 run to close the second half the Millersville women's basketball team defeated Shippensburg 70-56 Wednesday evening in the Marauders' final home contest of the regular season. It is the fourth-straight year that head coach
Mary Fleig's team has posted a 20-win season and 10th time in her 21 years at the helm of the MU bench.
The Marauders trailed Shippensburg (11-14, 6-7 PSAC East) for the final three minutes of the first period and 9:47 into the second, but once the club took over the lead it never looked back. A 3-pointer from
Jess Beswick and a trey and a layup from
Mashira Newman triggered a run to put the Black and Gold on top for good.
Millersville was led by Newman's career-high 30 points—the most points scored by a Marauder since the 2005-06 season. She tallied 19 of her points in the second half on 6-of-6 shooting from the floor and 2-of-2 from behind the arc. Newman also went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the second period.
Down by six to enter the break, Millersville's 20 first-half points on 28.6 percent shooting was a season low. The squad turned the page after halftime as it shot 54.2 percent from the floor and hit 19-of-24 from the free throw line.
Sophomore
Aurielle Mosley scored 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for her 10th-straight and 16th double-double of the season. Playing in her final home game of her Millersville career, lone senior
Domonique Stroman scored 10 points, pulled down seven rebounds and registered a block for the Marauders.
Mosley and junior
Gabrielle Styles each swatted four Shippensburg shots.
The Raiders were led by senior guard Kasey Gardner who scored a team-high 20 points. All but five of Gardner's points came in the first half.
Millersville closes out the regular season on the road at Kutztown. The match-up between the two teams is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26 in Keystone Arena.
