No. 8 North Georgia Outslugs Marauders, 12-10

Box Score

Dahlonega, Ga. - Millersville and eighth-ranked North Georgia traded blow after blow Sunday. But in the bottom of the seventh, the Saints capitalized on some wild Marauder pitching, and they went on to score four runs in the final three innings on just two hits. That late charge was just enough to edge Millersville, 12-10.

It was a back-and-forth affair with the lead changing hands eight times. The teams combined for 24 hits, 12 walks and seven hit batsmen. Both teams also stranded 12 runners on base. Derek Kline, who started the game and allowed six runs in three innings, made up for it at the plate by driving in career-high six runs on two hits. It marked the most RBIs by a Marauder since Enrique Arroyo also drove in six on April 19, 2008.

Millersville (1-2) led 8-6 after Kline ripped a bases loaded triple in the fifth. The bottom of the sixth started Millersville's undoing, though. Kyle Belanchik retired the first two batters, but an error put a runner aboard. The next two batters singled, and Belanchik was then called for a balk, giving North Georgia (8-1) the second of its unearned runs in the inning.

Millersville retook a two-run lead in the top of the seventh when Kline sacrificed home a run and Chris Edgar scored on an error. The lead would disappear in a hurry, though. North Georgia's first three batters of the seventh reached base via hit by pitch, walk and hit by pitch. A single scored two runs, tying the game at 10, and another batter was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Bobby Sunkel came on for Adam Zipko (0-1) and plunked the first batter he faced, forcing the go-ahead run across. He managed to escape with a double play but the damage had been done.

The Marauders forced North Georgia to use five pitchers in the first seven innings, but could not solve the back end of the Saint's bullpen. They put runners into scoring position in each of their last two at bats but could not bring them home. The Saints added another run for good measure in the eighth.

Daniel Warzon (1-0), who hit a walk-off single Saturday, earned the win Sunday after pitching two innings and allowing one unearned run. Zipko took the loss in his Millersville debut.

Ryan McCormick led Millersville at the plate, reaching base four times on two hits and two walks. He also scored three times. McCormick walked seven times and did not strike out in the three-game series. Edgar also recorded two singles and a double and scored three times. Mike August continued his hot start at the plate by going 2-for-4. Jeff Heisey walked three times and scored twice.

Millersville travels to Williamston, N.C., for a weekend series against Davis & Elkins and Fairmont State on Friday, Feb. 25.
