Millersville, Pa. – After suffering its first loss of the season Saturday, the Millersville women's basketball team controlled play from start to finish Sunday to beat Clarion by a score of 72-53.
Clarion (1-4, 1-3 PSAC) jumped to an early 14-13 lead with 12:32 remaining in the first half. Millersville (4-1-, 3-1 PSAC) responded with a 16-0 run over a span of 10 minutes before the Golden Eagles made another bucket. The Marauders closed out the half on a 23-6 run to take a 36-20 lead into the break.
Mashira Newman and
Sophia Waters were in double figures by the end of the first half with 13 and 12 points respectively. Millersville's defense caused 18 first half turnovers while the Marauders turned it over just eight times. Six different Marauders collected a steal in the first half.
Millersville didn't let up in the second half taking its largest lead of 27 points (53-25) at the 12:44 mark. The Marauders scored 29 points off of 26 Clarion turnovers. Millersville's bench registered a season-high 21 points.
Aurielle Mosley, for the second-straight game, improved in the second half. Mosley, scoring 11 points and 8 rebounds in the second half, collected her fifth-straight double-double this season. She finished the game with 17 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. She also hit her first 3-pointer of the season while also going 4-for-4 from the foul line.
Newman and Waters finished the game with 17 and 15 points respectively. Newman led all scorers with seven made field goals, and Waters hit 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Waters was also 4-for-4 at the free-throw line.
Freshman
Rachel Coulter, playing 10 minutes, scored a season-high seven points, including 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. Sophomore
Senada Mehmedovic was also perfect from the foul line going 2-for-2 to make Millersville 16-of-20 in the game.
Millersville hits the road for eight straight road games before returning home on Jan. 14. The Marauders travel to Lock Haven on Friday, Dec. 9 to take on the Bald Eagles at 5:30 p.m. Millersville then travels to Edinboro on Saturday, Dec. 10 for a 3 p.m. tip.
