Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville women's basketball team dominated the second half but were unable to catch Gannon to suffer its first loss of the season, 52-45. The Golden Knights had 21 point lead with three minutes remaining in the first half, which proved too much for the Marauders to overcome.
Millersville (3-1, 2-1 PSAC), down 14 at the break, cut Gannon's lead to three with just under two minutes remaining in regulation when
Mashira Newman dished to
Aurielle Mosley on the right side of the key. Mosley drained the shot to make it a three point game, 48-45 with 1:51 remaining.
The Golden Knights (4-0, 3-0 PSAC) pushed their lead back to 50-45 on its next possession on a jumper by Kelley Sundberg. Millersville failed on its next possession then fouled a Gannon player to stop the clock with 53 seconds remaining. Sundberg made good on both free throws to extend the Golden Knights' lead to 52-45.
The Marauders missed their next shot and elected not to foul with less than 20 seconds remaining to suffer their first loss of the season, 52-45.
Gannon commanded the first half on the shoulders of Jennifer Papich. Papich, going 10-for-11 from the field, scored 21 first-half points. The Golden Knights led the game 30-9 with 3:22 remaining in the first with the team shooting 52-percent. Millersville went on an 11-4 run to end the half, cutting Gannon's lead to 34-20.
Millersville shut down Papich and the Gannon attack in the second half. The Marauders held the Golden Knights to 13.6-percent from the field (3-for-22) in the second half. Gannon, however, was 12-for-18 from the foul line in the half, while Millersville made just 8-of-15.
Mosley came alive in the second half scoring 13 points and 13 boards in the final 20 minutes. Mosley earned her fourth-straight double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds in the loss.
Leola Pinkney was the only other Marauder to score in double figures. It was Pinkney's second-straight double-figure performance.
Millersville continues its weekend homestand against Clarion tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Pucillo Gymnasium.
