Millersville, Pa. - Millersville opened Sunday's PSAC contest with Slippery Rock on a torrid pace, racing to a 10-1 lead. That pace, however, could not be maintained. Millersville's offense went quiet and Slippery Rock pulled away late, 68-56.
One day after scoring 25 points, Millersville's (2-2, 0-2 PSAC) leading scorer
Larry Grant came up empty, going 0-12 from the field. The rest of the offense followed suit, hitting 36.5 percent from the field. The loss was Millersville's second in a row.
Slippery Rock (2-1, 1-1 PSAC East) hardly set the Pucillo Gymnasium nets ablaze, shooting 22-of-57 from the field, and that allowed the Marauders to keep the game close until late in the second period. The Rock held a 36-30 lead at the half and quickly opened that advantage to 10 points on a hoop from John Bayardelle. Slippery Rock maintained its 10-point lead until the 15:25 mark when
Jaymes Miller started a 12-2 run with two of his team-high 15 points.
Miller and
Anthony Coleman each hit two baskets,
Rob Wyley scored on a put-back, and
Elijah Obade tied the game at 46 with 10:08 to go with a layup off an assist from Coleman.
The contested stayed within a one-score margin until Aubin Reeves scored to put Slippery Rock in front 55-51 with 3:57 to go. Millersville went without a field goal for the next 4:35. The Rock used that Marauder cold spell and free throws to pull away.
Miller's 15 points was a season-high and came after scoring four in Saturday's game against Mercyhurst. Coleman added nine on 4-of-5 shooting. Obade totaled 14 points on 6-of-15 shooting. Slippery Rock was led by Jon Valeriano's 13 points.
Millersville hopes to end a two-game skid Wednesday at Wilmington. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
MSBN will be on hand for the play-by-play.
