Millersville, Pa. - Freshman quarterback
Sean Quarterman sparked Millersville to 17 unanswered points in the second half of Saturday's season finale against Clarion. But Clarion running back Pat Graham-Murphy crushed Millersville's hopes of a comeback with his fifth TD of the game late in the fourth quarter, and the Golden Eagles handed the homestanding Marauders a 34-20 loss.
Graham-Murphy totaled 266 yards rushing and five touchdowns on 35 carries, and accounted for all but 58 yards of Clarion's total offense. Playing without starting quarterback Ben Fiscus, the Golden Eagles relied heavily on the run, and the gameplan worked. Graham-Murphy broke a 79-yard TD run in the first quarter and scored three, third-quarter touchdowns before closing the door on Millersville's comeback with a 50-yard run with 3:32 to go.
Millersville (3-8) trailed 7-3 in the closing minutes of the first half, but
Dan Miller sparked a quick drive to the Clarion (3-8) 16, setting up an
Anthony Kassab field goal attempt. His 33-yard attempt, however, was blocked, and Clarion kept its 7-3 lead into the half.
The Golden Eagles seemingly blew open the game in the third quarter, taking a 27-3 lead after a Millersville fumbled punt put the Golden Eagles in prime field position. Graham-Murphy scored from 10 yards out for his third TD of the quarter.
Millersville's own running back,
Marquis White, quickly answered, however. White, who finished with a career-high 108 yards on 14 carries, took the next Millersville offensive snap 83 yards for a touchdown--the longest play from scrimmage this season and the longest run by a Marauder since Marc DeBelis' 93-yard run against Mansfield in 1993.
The Marauder defense forced a quick three-and-out, and Quarterman led 12-play, 75-yard drive that ended in Kassab's second field goal of the game. After a short Clarion punt put the Millersville offense at the Clarion 28, Quarterman hooked up with fellow freshman
Brent Collins for 22 yards to the Clarion six. White finished the run with a six yards run off the left edge. That score cut Clarion's lead to 27-20 with 7:58 to go in the game. The Golden Eagles lead hard on Graham-Murphy the next drive and five rushes pushed them to the 50. After a Millersville timeout stopped the clock with 3:49 to go, Graham-Murphy dealt Millersville the back-breaking 50-yard run.
Quarterman hit his first two passes of the next drive, but his third attempt was picked off by Chris Wilson at the Clarion 13, effectively ending Millersville's chances.
Quarterman was 6-for-12 with 92 yards and also rushed five times for 36 yards. Collins,
Dominic Sanders and
David Barnes all had three catches.
Greg Frantz hauled in two receptions. Millersville out-gained Clarion 344-324 including 168-22 through the air. 302 of Clarion's 322 yards came on the ground.
Despite playing in only six games at running back, White finished with 464 yards and six touchdowns--the most rushing scores by a Marauder since 2008.
Millersville finished its 2011 campaign with a 3-8 overall record and loses 11 seniors. Eight defensive starters and 10 offensive starters should return.
