Marauders Fumble Away Chances in Loss to C.W. Post

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. - After five weeks on the road, Millersville played its first home game of the season Saturday, but it was C.W. Post that looked like the home team. A strong defensive effort was for naught as the Marauders committed four turnovers--three inside their own territory--and C.W. Post capitalized for a 24-6 win.

Millersville (2-4, 1-2 PSAC East) received an early spark from Marquis White, who, playing in his first game at running back, led the team with 65 yards and broke off a 52-yard TD run in the second. In the previous two games, White had seen time at cornerback.

The Marauders also tried two different quarterbacks. Starter Dan Miller went 5-for-10 for 27 yards and an interception. Freshman Sean Quarterman completed his first pass but missed on his next six. The two were sacked a total of six times.

Millersville finished with 104 yards of offense including 41 through the air--the fewest by a Marauder team since totaling 25 on Oct. 27, 2007 versus Cheyney. Dominic Sanders and Brent Collins evenly split the six receptions.

The Marauder defense was handcuffed by field position all game. C.W. Post (3-3, 3-0 PSAC East) started 10 of its 17 offensive drives inside Millersville territory. After surrendering an opening drive touchdown to the Pioneers, the Marauder defense was staunch. The next Pioneer drive ended when Dan McClellan picked off a pass from Steve Laurino in the end zone.

On the next six drives, Millersville forced three punts, recovered a fumble and turned over the Pioneers on downs. The Pioneers needed a short field to score its only second quarter touchdown, which gave them a 14-6 lead with 8:31 to go in the half.

The Pioneers buit the lead after recovering a White fumble at the Millersville 10 yard line. On third and goal, Laurino scrambled for nine yards and pay dirt. Millersville's next drive went three-and-out, and C.W. Post received the ball at the Millersville 49. A short drive ended in a field goal and a 24-6 advantage. Millersville picked up just three first downs over the final quarter and a half.

Laurino scored two of his team's three touchdowns and rushed for 131 yards on 28 totes. He also threw for 133 yards on 9-of-19 passing. Millersville sacked him three times.

C.W. Post had totaled over 400 yards of offense against both West Chester and Shippensburg the previous two weeks, but Millersville held it to 314. Pat Maloney and Gary Tillman both totaled seven tackles to lead the team. Doug Henninger, Ryan Christian and Jordan Rigby all registered sacks. The Marauders totaled nine tackles for loss as a team.

Millersville hosts Kutztown on Oct. 15 with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
