Shippensburg Puts Marauders on Ice

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. - As a rare October snow storm pounded Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium, Shippensburg did its best to put a damper on Millersville's Homecoming celebration. Mike Frenette's 71-yard touchdown run in the first quarter started the avalanche and the Red Raiders buried the Marauders 40-0 Saturday afternoon.

Both teams were affected by the heavy, wet snow that accumulated to several inches on the field of play. With a necessary reliance on the running game, Shippensburg excelled, piling up 391 rushing yards on 58 carries. The two teams combined for just 10 completions, nine fumbles and four interceptions. Shippensburg lost two fumbles, Millersville lost one. Millersville threw three interceptions and Ship's Zach Zulli threw one but offset it with three touchdown passes.

Millersville quarterback Dan Miller was sacked seven times, and Millersville had negative yards of total offense until Marquis White broke a 55-yard run with six minutes left in the fourth quarter.

The game started promisingly for the Marauders as Derrick Bass returned the opening kickoff 43 yards to the Shippensburg 45-yard line. Millersville reached the Ship 29 before being forced to punt, but field position looked to be a key factor early, and Jeff Lawson pinned the Red Raiders on their own 2-yard line. The Millersville defense forced a three-and-out, but on the Shippensburg punt, Millersville was flagged for roughing the punter. Ship received a fresh set of downs but needed only one play to changed the course of the game. Frenette ripped off 71 of his 177 yards on the next play from scrimmage.

Millersville's only other two first downs of the first half came on Shippensburg penalties, and the offense did not generate a first down until White's run in the fourth quarter--a span of 12 offensive possessions.

Shippensburg received a Jacob Baskerville touchdown reception and two second quarter Kevin Herod TD runs to take a 27-0 lead into the half. Frenette scored on a 37-yard jaunt early in the third, and Zulli capped the scoring with a touchdown completion to Trevor Harman from nine yards.

Zulli completed 7-of-15 passes for 70 yards. Miller finished 3-of-12 for 21 yards yards and a pick. Sean Quarterman went 0-for-4 with two interceptions. The Marauders were outgained 461-62 in total offense.

Millersville's defensive charge was led by Jake Allen's career-high 14 tackles. Gary Tillman also set a career-high with 13 stops.

Millersville returns home next Saturday to face West Chester. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
