Marauders' Last Minute TD Completes Comeback Win Over ESU

Box Score

East Stroudsburg, Pa. - One year ago, East Stroudsburg spoiled Millersville's Homecoming. On Saturday, it was Millersville's turn to ruin East Stroudsburg's. Dan Miller and Dominic Sanders hooked up for a touchdown with 17 seconds left to complete a come-from-behind, 31-27 win over the homestanding Warriors.

Millersville (3-5, 2-3 PSAC East) trailed 24-14 with 4:22 left in the third quarter but roared back using a field goal from Anthony Kassab, a touchdown pass from Miller to Brent Collins and then the game-winner to Sanders.

Millersville's offense, which entered the game ranked 150th out of 150 Division II teams, posted a season-high 31 points, went 5-for-6 in the red zone and totaled 313 yards of total offense--also a season high. Led by Marquis White's career-high 115 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and Millers's 76 yards, Millersville totaled a season-high 198 yards on the ground.

ESU quarterback Ray Wagner entered the game fresh off two straight 500-yard passing games and as the nation's leading passer with an average of 381.0 yards per game. The Marauders, however, flustered him into three interceptions and 13-of-24 passing before he was injured after his touchdown pass to Dusty Reed put the Warriors up 17-14 with 9:49 left in the third. Wagner didn't play another snap, but his back-up Nate Daniels went 7-for-10 with 182 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Millersville forced a total of five turnovers and converted them into 21 points. Dan McClellan picked off two passes, Lou Brown intercepted one, and senior linebacker Craig Gardner's 49-yard interception return to the ESU 10-yard line set-up Collins' 10-yard TD grab that tied the game at 24.

East Stroudsburg opened the scoring in the first quarter with a Taylor Groff field goal. The next six drives went without a score, and Brown's interception returned to the ESU 21-yard line put the Marauders in scoring position. Two plays later, White scored the first of his two touchdowns to put Millersville in front, 7-3.

ESU quickly retook the lead following an 80-yard drive, but after a Millersville punt, McClellan intercepted Wagner and returned it 28 yards to the ESU six. White scored from one-yard out for his second TD run. The Marauders took the 14-10 lead into the half.

The Warriors scored on both of their first two drives of the second half to take a 24-14 edge. The second was a 72-yard bomb from Daniels to Jordan Hallman. Hallman finished with 221 yards and two touchdowns.

Kassab closed Millersville's next drive with a field goal, and Gardner's pick and return put the Marauders in position to tie the game. Another Groff field goal broke the tie, but Kevin Kelley returned the ensuing kickoff 45 yards to the 50-yard line. Miller scrambled three times and completed a pair of passes to reach the ESU 12. With 24 seconds left, a pass into the end zone intended for Collins resulted in pass interference on ESU, moving the ball to the two. Miller then tossed a fade to Sanders, who hauled in the jump ball in the back corner of the end zone.

East Stroudsburg's final drive fizzled at the Millersville 43.

The Millersville win also spoiled the celebration of ESU coach Denny Douds' record-setting 394th game on the sideline. With that game, he set the all-time Division II record for games coached.

Millersville junior Pat Maloney totaled seven tackles, two sacks and forced a fumble. Gary Tillman led the team with nine stops. Sanders matched a career high with seven catches and totaled a career high in yards with 84.

Millersville returns home for its final three games of the season. It hosts Shippensburg on Oct. 29 for its annual Homecoming game. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
