Huntingdon, Pa. – Junior Sarah Bernhardt broke both the 50- and 100-meter freestyle Binder Natatorium records while swimming a NCAA "B" qualifying time in the 100 with a time of 59.19. The Marauders swept the competition by defeating Juniata 112-87 and Marywood, 113.5-85.5.
Bernhardt took first place in both the 50 and 100, finishing the 50 in 27.60 seconds. Bernhardt smoked the competition in the 100 by more than six seconds. Juniata's Kelsey Miles took second place with a time of 1:05.90. Bernhardt's pace of 59.19 seconds earned her an NCAA provisional mark.
Junior Arielle Walbert took first place in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:10.95. Walbert's pace was just shy of the pool's record. Amanda Thomas finished third in the race to collect points for the Marauders with a time of 1:14.37.
Millersville took first and third in the 200-meter medley relay. Walbert, Brigid Mary McDonnell, Laura Cody and Bernhardt took first place with a time of 2:08.71 to beat the competition by seven seconds. Emma Viets, Adriana Rodriguez, Katie Bentley and Becca Anderson finished in third with a time of 2:19.90 to give the Marauders 13 of the 17 points in the event.
The Marauders took first place in two more events to give them six first-place finishes in 11 events. Laura Castello took first place in the 800-meter freestyle while freshman Julia Price finished behind her in second. McDonnell, who was part of the first place 200-meter medley relay team, took first in the 200-meter IM.
“The team swam well tonight despite having a long bus ride with delays and limited time to warm up,” said head coach Kyle Almoney. “They have continued to improve and are swimming very fast early in the season.”
Millersville defeated both East Stroudsburg and Mansfield a week ago at the Millersville Relays and stays undefeated with tonight's sweep of Juniata and Marywood.
The Marauders host Mansfield next Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Pucillo Natatorium. Millersville and the Mountaineers begin the meet at 1 p.m.
