Lock Haven, Pa. - The Millersville men and women's cross country teams entered the season with high expectations, and the opportunity to reach the lofty goals comes Saturday in Lock Haven at the PSAC Cross Country Championships.
The Marauder women were picked third in the conference preseason poll but injuries and a lack of depth has slowed them. Star junior Elicia Anderson missed the first two races of the year before placing third in back-to-back weeks at the Lock Haven Invitational and Slippery Rock Invitational. Anderson was the runner-up to Shippensburg's Neely Spence a year ago when the team finished fifth.
Four other runners on the women's team competed in the conference championship last year. Sarah Mulvey has been among the most consistent runners this year, running as the No. 2 or No. 3 on the team behind Anderson and newcomer Brittney Martin. It is Martin's first appearance at the PSAC Championship but she is no stranger to big conference events. With Seton Hill last year, she competed at the WVIAC Championships.
If Anderson is fully healthy from her foot injury, she will certainly be in the mix for All-PSAC honors. Spence and Shippensburg has won four consecutive titles but only two of the runners that scored on last year's team are back. East Stroudsburg's Rose Mascoli and Bloomsburg's Vicki Davis have both won all four races they have run this year. As a team, the Marauders have improved its standing in each of the last three years.
On the men's side, James McBride has experienced success at Lock Haven before and is looking for his first All-PSAC honor. On Sept. 24 this year, McBride won the Lock Haven Invitational with an 8K time of 25:44.50. As a sophomore last season, McBride placed 23rd in the event.
Sophomore Bradley Slaughter has followed McBride closely as the team's No. 2 runner. He posted a time of 27:10.70 at the Lock Haven Invitatioanl to finish 24th, but this is his first PSAC Championship appearance. Sophomores Zach Mains and Chris Brandt should also be near the front of the pack for the Marauders.
The Marauders' last All-PSAC performer was Adam Malloy in 2008 and the last and only team crown came in 1979. Millersville's seventh-place finish last year was its highest since 2004. Top contenders on the men's side include Edinboro's Scott Anderson, who won the race last season, and Stephen schelander and Matt Gillette from Shippensburg. Edinboro was chosen as the preseason favorite and has 28 team titles all-time. Shippensburg is the defending champion.
