No. 18 Millersville Flies Past Lady Eagles

Clarion, Pa. – The last time the Millersville and Clarion women's basketball teams faced off in PSAC crossover action was over two years ago and the Marauders came away a nine-point victory. Thanks to a 31-8 run that spanned the final 16 minutes of action the No. 18 Marauders notched another win over the Lady Eagles (2-8) Tuesday evening, this time 66-38 at Tippin Gymnasium.

Millersville (8-2) wraps up conference crossover action on the road with a 1-1 finish after dropping a four-point game to No. 21 Gannon just one night ago.

Nabbing eight steals and forcing 17 Clarion turnovers Millersville held the Lady Eagles scoreless for the final 9:07 of play. While the host team relied on Mackenzie Clark for the majority of its points, Millersville received double-digit scores from three of its players.

The Marauders jumped out to an early lead just 4:43 in and never backed down, holding a double-digit advantage for the majority of the contest. A club that ranks second in the conference on the offensive glass, Millersville converted 10 second-chance points and held a 23-14 overall rebound advantage in the period.

While the Marauders got into foul into some foul trouble, 10 of Clarion's 25 first-half points came from the charity stripe. MU took an eight-point lead going into the break.

Millersville opened the second half with a bucket and set the pace for the remainder of the time on the hardwood. Clarion scored a mere 13 points while the Marauders exploded and gave head coach Mary Fleig her 501st career win.

The Black and Gold forced 30 Clarion turnovers overall and nabbed 15 steals. On the offensive end, Millersville scored 32 points in the paint.

Fleig emptied her bench for the second time this season and saw 20 of her club's 33 second-half points come from non-starters. Freshman Brittney Gunn pulled down a career-high eight rebounds to go along with her career-high three steals.

Domonique Stroman finished with a team-high 12 points, followed by Sophia Waters with 11 and Mashira Newman with 10. Carrie Sheffey also scored a career-high eight points and registered a game-high two 3-pointers.

Millersville hosts Lock Haven and Edinboro this weekend for its final pair of PSAC crossover games. The match ups with the Lady Eagles and Warriors are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 9 at 1 p.m., respectively.
