Box Score
Erie, Pa. – Despite knotting the score at 45 with 4:10 remaining in action, the No. 17 Millersville women's basketball team was unable to top No. 21 Gannon Monday evening in a PSAC crossover game. The Marauders were edged 55-51 and suffered just their second loss of the season, while the Lady Knights (6-3) kept their consecutive home-win streak alive at 20 games.
Millersville (7-2) and Gannon exchanged baskets for the final minutes of the contest but the Lady Knights never surrendered the lead. Forced to foul, Millersville sent Gannon the free throw line where the host team knocked down eight-straight shots.
Mashira Newman scored the Marauders' final bucket with :07 showing on the clock to bring her team within two, but Gannon's efficiency at the charity stripe sealed the game.
The match-up between the two clubs, which last faced off just one year ago in the 2010 NCAA Athlatic Regional final at the Hammermill Center, was high intensity from the tip-off. The Marauders, who nabbed 16 steals and forced 22 Lady Knight turnovers in the game, tried to avenge the 65-48 defeat by a then top-ranked and undefeated Gannon squad.
Despite suffering a scoring drought and shooting a season-low 30 percent, Millersville was still able to keep up with Gannon on the scoreboard, which shot 43.8 percent from the floor.
A large part of the Marauders' ability to stay in the game was due to their domination on the glass. The squad out-rebounded the Lady Knights by a 47-32 margin and pulled down a season-high 30 offensive boards.
Aurielle Mosley, who registered her fifth double-double performance of the season, scored 13 points and pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds—including 11 on the offensive end. Mosley's rebound total is the most by a Marauder since the 2002-03 season.
Millersville saw a career-performance from
Gabrielle Styles as well, who grabbed 13 rebounds and nabbed a game-high six steals. Newman registered a game-high 16 points for MU.
The Marauders look to bounce back on Tuesday when they travel to Clarion for their second conference crossover contest in as many days. Game time with the Lady Eagles is scheduled for 6 p.m., inside Tippin Gymnasium.
