Hot-Shooting Bloomsburg Knocks Off No. 16 Marauders

Box Score

Bloomsburg, Pa. – Bloomsburg used a 17-1 run in the beginning of the first half to take an 11-point lead and No. 16 Millersville could not recover from the deficit as the unranked Huskies upset the visitors 75-58 Wednesday evening inside Nelson Field House. The loss breaks Millersville's 9-0 running streak against the Huskies dating back to 2006, as the Marauders fall to 10-3, 0-1 PSAC East.

Stifled by 8-of-31 first-half shooting from the floor, the Marauders allowed Bloomsburg (9-4, 1-0 PSAC East) to take control quickly. The Huskies' shooting performance was quite the opposite of Millersville's, as they received two 3-pointers from four separate players on 66.7 percent shooting from behind the arc in the first period alone.

Millersville turned the ball over 11 times and nabbed a season-low two steals as the clubs entered the break with a 38-24 Bloomsburg lead. The 12-point deficit going into halftime was the most by the Marauders thus far on the season.

Lone senior Domonique Stroman opened the second half with three-straight jumpers to spark a 10-4 run and bring the Marauders within eight, a position they had not seen themselves in since the 5:41 mark in the first. But just when Millersville saw the game within its grasp, Bloomsburg's Courtney Nyce drained back-to-back treys to widen the advantage to 15.

Despite receiving double-figure performances from four players the Marauders had no answer for the Huskies' 12 3-pointers and 44.8 percent shooting from the floor. Bloomsburg saw two or more points come from eight players and saw 18 points from the bench.

The lack of depth on the bench hindered Millersville throughout the night and it was visible on the court. Mary Fleig's squad was hindered by a shooting performance of 6-of-20 from the 3-point line and 21-of-67 from the floor. The Marauders also turned the ball over 24 times while the Huskies combined for only nine steals.

Stroman led her club with her second career double-double. She put up a team-leading 13 points and grabbed down a career-high 15 rebounds. Aurielle Mosley, who struggled offensively all evening, pulled down 17 boards.

Sophia Waters scored 12 points and Gabrielle Styles and Mashira Newman added 11and 10 points, respectively. Helping on the defensive end, Carrie Sheffey nabbed a career-high three steals.

The Marauders have not suffered a loss by such a large margin since the end of the 2009-10 season when they were knocked off by then-No. 1 Gannon in the NCAA Regional Finals.

Millersville looks to rebound when it returns home on Saturday, Jan. 15 for a PSAC East contest with Mansfield. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
