ABOUT THE GAME
• Millersville exhibited a high-powered offense for the second-straight week by defeating Lock Haven 35-21 to even its record at 1-1. Gannon invades Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium Saturday looking to stay unbeaten. The Golden Knights are coming off a come-from-behind victory at Shippensburg in which it scored 22 unanswered points in the second half. Audio can be heard on the home of Millersville Athletics, the Marauder Sports Broadcasting Network (MSBN). The broadcast, featuring play-by-play announcer Domenic Panza, can be accessed at www.millersvilleathletics.com. The audio will also be the backdrop for the live video which can be watched at www.millersvilleathletics.com/streaming.
• Millersville's passing attack--led by
Bill Shirk--totaled four touchdowns and 232 yards passing against Lock Haven. Shirk now has seven TD passes in two games and ranks first in the PSAC in passing efficiency. He is also second in the league in passing yards per game.
Matt Egenrieder totaled 100 yards receiving in each of the first two games this season, and
Jamal Smith leads the PSAC in catches per game. The Marauders were also able to get running back
Mike Jones rolling. He totaled 100 yards on 15 carries and displayed big-play ability with a 52-yard run. The run game will likely be the key to Millersville's success. Gannon's defense has surrendered no more than 20 points in either game, but both opponents have found chinks in Gannon's armor. Lake Erie rushed for 182 yards and totaled 352 yards of total offense. Shippensburg rushed for 186 yards. After two games, Gannon ranks 13th in the PSAC. As good as Millersville's passing game has been, Gannon's pass defense has been equally as good. The Golden Knights are allowing just 143.5 yards per game through the air and have picked off four passes.
• The Marauders' defense, which ranked last in the league in rushing defense a year ago, currently ranks seventh, allowing 128.5 yards per game. Gannon has not been a prolific offense so far this season, ranking 12th in the PSAC with just 311.5 yards of total offense. Millersville generated five turnovers last week again Lock Haven including four interceptions.
EAST MEETS WEST
• Saturday marks the beginning of the mandated three-game PSAC crossover schedule. Millersville, a member of the PSAC Eastern Division, has faced at least one Western Division team each season since 1992. The full, three-game crossover began in 2006. Since then, the Marauders are 4-9 against PSAC West teams, and three of those wins came against Lock Haven. The other win came against Indiana (Pa.) in 2006.
• Coach Greg Colby is 1-6 against the PSAC West in two seasons at Millersville.
• The PSAC split into divisions into 1960. Millersville has never played new PSAC West additions Mercyhurst and Gannon, but it is 54-96-4 all-time against the original seven (Shippensburg, Indiana, California, Edinboro, Slippery Rock and Clarion). Millersville has a losing record against six of the seven teams, and its record against Clarion is 6-5.
ABOUT THE SERIES
• Saturday's game is the first-ever meeting between the Marauders and Golden Knights. Gannon left the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and joined the PSAC prior to the 2009 season. Gannon competes in the PSAC Western Division.
THE HEAD COACHES
• Millersville's Greg Colby is in his third season as head coach. He inherited a youthful roster and a program that hadn't posted a winning season since 2000. He is 4-18 in his first two seasons as the coach. He spent most of his career as an assistant at the Division I level, though. From 1979-86, he was the head coach at Schlarman High School and Naperville High School in Illinois. While at Schlarman, Colby led the team to back-to-back Illinois High School 2-A State Championships (1981-82).
• Colby has an impressive resume. He came to Millersville after serving as the defensive coordinator at Northwestern from 2002-07 during which time the Wildcats posted three-straight six-win seasons for the first time in 70 years. He was also the defensive coordinator at Kent State for four seasons and served as a defensive assistant at Michigan State under Nick Saban and at Illinois under Lou Tepper.
• Kiernan begins his fourth season at Gannon in 2010. During that time span, he has turned the football program upside down. And that has been a good thing. Two years after Gannon posted back-to-back 1-10 campaigns, Kiernan directed the Golden Knights to a 6-5 record last season. A 10-7 overtime victory at nationally-ranked Bloomsburg in the season finale capped a season-concluding four-game win streak and secured the program's first winning season since 2003.
• Kiernan spent eight seasons as the Saginaw Valley State assistant head coach and offensive coordinator prior to arriving at Gannon. The Cardinals were 69-24 (.742) overall and 62-17 (.785) in GLIAC contests during Kiernan's tenure. The program advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament five times during his final seven seasons. He also served as offensive coordinator at Mercyhurst, Lakeland College and Kentucky Wesleyan. Kiernan was a four-year letterman at his alma mater, St. Lawrence University.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
• Dating back to the end of last season, Gannon is one of the hottest teams in the PSAC. The Golden Knights are 2-0 this year with close wins over Lake Erie and Shippensburg and closed the 2009 season with four-straight victories.
• Senior quarterback Zach Boedicker accounted for 83 percent of Gannon's offense in week one, and he leads the team with 133 yards rushing and 335 yards passing. He has completed 62.8 percent of his passes and has scored five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) without throwing an interception. Boedicker ranks fourth in the PSAC in passing efficiency. Boedicker gained 108 yards rushing against Lake Erie and gained 94 yards rushing against Shippensburg but was sacked four times.
• Outside of Boedicker, the running game is manned by Tyler Batts and Tony Sims but the two have combined for just 155 yards in two games. Boedicker's has completed a pass to eight different targets. Levar Groff is the top weapon with six catches for 87 yards a touchdown. Gannon has two pass plays of more than 47 yards this year.
• Defensively, Gannon is allowing just 19.5 points per game and is seventh in the league in total defense. Matthew Neal-Mink ranks among Gannon's all-time top 10 in tackles with 229 career stops. The defense has generated five sacks and four interceptions in two games. Connor Kimball leads the team with two picks.
THE LAST TIME OUT
• Senior
Bill Shirk tossed four touchdown passes and the Millersville defense recorded four interceptions, sparking the Marauders to a 35-21 victory over Lock Haven Saturday afternoon at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
• Shirk, who threw three touchdowns in week one, completed 20-of-30 passes for 232 yards on Saturday. Three of his TD strikes went to senior
Jamal Smith, and the other went to junior defensive lineman
Donald Vodopija, who slipped into the end zone for a two-yard catch--the first reception of his career.
• Since tying a school record with four touchdown catches against Kutztown in 2009, Smith has totaled at least three touchdowns in two of the last four games. He finished Saturday's game with a team-high eight catches and 92 yards, giving him at least eight grabs and 90 yards in each of the first two games of 2010. Junior
Matt Egenrieder caught five passes for 116 yards, giving him back-to-back 100-yard games.
• Running back
Mike Jones also posted his first career 100-yard game. He logged 100 yards on 16 carries, one of which went for 52 yards.
• For the second game in a row, the offense produced explosive plays, but it was the Marauder defense that set the tone early. Millersville went three-and-out on its first series. Senior safety
Matt Sutjak picked off Robert Meade on Lock Haven's first offensive play of the game, though, and sprinted 44 yards to the Lock Haven 4-yard line, setting up Shirk's first TD toss to Smith.
• Millersville scored at least one touchdown in all four quarters, and it was the first time the Marauders produced a 100-yard rusher and 100-yard receiver in the same game since Nov. 1, 2008. Lock Haven outgained the Marauders 357 to 352 but turned the ball over five times and racked up 107 yards on 13 penalties.
•
Pat Maloney led Millersville with 11 tackles including two for loss.
Shane Gross also tallied two tackles for loss and finished with nine stops.
Martique Vanderpool and
Alfred Williams also intercepted passes for the Marauders.
TURN OF THE CENTURY
• Led by
Mike Jones' 100 yards, Millersville totaled 120 yards rushing, marking the first time this season the team went over 100 yards on the ground. The Marauders were limited to 88 yards rushing in the season opener marking the fifth time in the last 11 games that the Marauders had been held to fewer than 100 yards rushing. This came on the heels of a 22-game stretch dating from 2007 to the first game of 2009 in which Millersville recorded at least 100 yards. Millersville has just three individual 100-yard efforts in the last 14 games.
A QUARTET OF SCORES
•
Bill Shirk threw four touchdown passes against Lock Haven, marking the second time in his career and the second time in his last six games that he has throw four TD passes. He also hit
Jamal Smith for four TD's against Kutztown on Oct. 24, 2009. Shirk has now thrown two or more touchdown passes in a game eight times in his career. Shirk threw three touchdown passes in the opener against Assumption. It was the fifth time in his career that he has thrown at least three TD passes in one game. He accomplished the feat twice in each of his first two seasons. He also threw for three scores in back-to-back games in October of 2008.
MILLERSVILLE PICKERS
• Led by
Matt Sutjak's two interceptions, the Marauders totaled four interceptions against Lock Haven. Sutjak's two picks were a career-high and the four were the most by the team since 2007.
Alfred Williams recorded his first career interception, and
Martique Vanderpool made his second career interception and first since the 2008 season.
ASSIST TO THE DEFENSE
•
Zack Riley scored a defensive touchdown for Millersville in week one by returning a fumble off of a quarterback sack. It was Riley's first career touchdown and the the fumble return for a touchdown by a Marauder since Derrick Bass scored on a fumbled punt against Slippery Rock on Sept. 6, 2008. It also marked the second time in three season openers under Greg Colby that the defense has generated a touchdown. Against Bentley in 2008,
Dan McClellan returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown.
BOMBS AWAY
•
Bill Shirk hooked up with
Matt Egenrieder for an 87-yard touchdown pass in the season opener and also found him for a 50-yard strike in week two. The 87-yard pass was the second-longest pass reception in school history, trailing only Drew Folmar and Sean Scott's 91-yard strike in 2000. Shirk has completed 11 passes of more than 35 yards during his time as Millersville's starting quarterback.
• Shirk now has two touchdown passes of at least 80 yards in his career. Against West Chester in 2008, he and
Jamal Smith connected for an 80-yard TD.
SHIRK FOR 300
• With 42-of-62 passing, 542 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception,
Bill Shirk ranks first in the PSAC and 10th in Division II with a 175.21 passer rating. He also ranks 23rd nationally in passing yards.
• Of the week one performances, only Matt Marshall of East Stroudsburg topped Shirk's 310 yards. Marshall threw for 337 with the same number of completions.
• It was the second 300-yard passing game for Shirk and the first in more than a season. He last hit the mark on Oct. 18, 2008 against C.W. Post. Shirk's two performances are Millersville's only 300-yard games since 2004.
• Each of the last three games with 300 yards passing have ended in losses for the Marauders.
DOUBLE THE FUN
• Both
Matt Egenrieder (106) and
Jamal Smith (103) recorded more than 100 yards receiving in the season opener against Assumption. It marked the first time two Millersville receivers totaled 100 yards in the same game since Ryan Clift and Omar Sanders on Sept. 4, 2004.
• In week two, Egenrieder totaled 116 yards receiving and
Mike Jones totaled 100 yards rushing, giving a 100-yard rusher and 100-yard receiver in the same game for the first time since Nov. 1, 2008.
MOVING ON UP
•
Bill Shirk has passed for 4,161 yards and 34 touchdowns in 22 career starts. With 232 passing yards against Lock Haven, Shirk moved past Gregg Kaplan (1982-85) in the record books for sixth all-time in passing yards. Additionally, Shirk needs just 328 yards to pass Carmen Lex (1974-77) for fifth all-time.
• Last season, Shirk's 1,734 yards ranked him eighth in the PSAC. Among returning quarterbacks this season, only California's Josh Portis passed for more yards than Shirk a season ago. He entered the year as the active leader of all PSAC quarterbacks in career passing yards.
• With another 1,700-plus yard season, Shirk will become the first Millersville quarterback to turn in three career seasons of 1,700 or more passing yards since Drew Folmar (1997-2000). He was also just the fourth QB all-time to achieve that feat.
• Shirk also ranks eighth in career total offense. With 4,274 yards in 31 games, his 137.9 yards per game average is seventh all-time. He has totaled 4,152 of those yards in his last 23 games, which is an average of 180.5 yards per game. Shirk passed Ricke Stonewall for eighth place and trails Gregg Caplan by 91 yards and Mike Burke by 183 yards. If he maintains his current season average, he could finish the season third all-time ahead of Millersville Hall of Fame QB Carmen Lex (1974-77), Greg Moylan (1993-96) and Dan Csencsitz (2003-06).
IN SEARCH OF SACKS
• The defense is hoping to increase its pass rush this season. In week one,
Shane Gross recorded the team's lone sack. Gross is now tops on the team with five career sacks. The Marauders failed to record a sack in week two against Lock Haven.
• Millersville upped its sack total by from seven in 2008 to 18 in 2009, but that total ranked in a tie for 14th in the PSAC. The sack leader, California (Pa.), totaled 37.
• Millersville's team leader in sacks in 2009 was junior
Antwain Brown-Barnes with 4.5.
Shane Gross totaled 4.0, and
Chad Miller added 3.0. Eight different players tallied at least one sack, but only three players had more than 2.0. While 18 sacks ranked near the bottom of the league, it was the most sacks in a season by a Millersville team since totaling 26 in 2005. Brown-Barnes' 4.5 sacks in 2009 was the most by any Marauder since Tim Schultz and Chuck Koch each recorded 5.0 in 2004. The last Marauder to record double-digit sacks in a season was Lee Rizzotto (11) in 1999.
DO-IT-ALL JAMAL
• In his first full season at wide receiver in 2009, senior
Jamal Smith displayed the ability to be a game changer. Smith averaged 123.4 all-purpose yards per game last season, placing him second in the PSAC.
• Smith is off to an outstanding start in 2010. He totaled 152 all-purpose yards in the season opener on 103 yards receiving, 25 yards rushing, and 24 yards on one punt return and one kick return. He followed that effort with 126 yards (92 receiving, four rushing, 29 on kick returns, one on a punt return) against Lock Haven. He ranks third in the PSAC in all-purpose yards per game (139.0).
• With 17 catches in two weeks, Smith is first in the PSAC and 13th in Division II in catches per game.
• With 103 yards receiving against Assumption in the opener, Smith eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the fifth time in his career.
• Smith totaled a career-high nine catches against Assumption. He became the first Marauder since Andy Tischbein on Nov. 1, 2008 to record nine catches in a game. That total also placed him second in the league in receptions after the first week.
• With at least 700 receiving yards this season, Smith would become the first Marauder with back-to-back 700-yard receiving seasons since Sean Scott accomplished that feat during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. Additionally, another 1,300-plus all-purpose yard season would mark the first time a Marauder has turned in back-to-back 1,300-yard efforts since Kevin Cannon turned in 1,600-plus yard campaigns in 1994 and 1995.
SMITH FOR THE SCORE
• Smith's three touchdowns in week two was one behind his career high and he now ranks second in the PSAC in scoring and is tied for the league lead in receiving touchdowns.
• Smith has become one of the top touchdown threats in the PSAC, and he can score from anywhere on the field. He has totaled 28 career touchdowns including 15 receiving, seven rushing and six passing. Ten of the 15 receiving touchdowns in his career have gone for more than 20 yards.
• Smith ranks sixth in Millersville history in receiving touchdowns in a career. He trails Andy Tischbein (2005-2008) by one and Aaron Wyley (1976-79) by two.
• Smith's four touchdown outing against Kutztown in 2009 tied Kevin Cannon's school record for receiving touchdowns in a game.
• Smith's 80-yard grab against West Chester in 2008 was the team's longest completion since Drew Folmar's 91-yard TD pass to Sean Scott in 1999.
• In '09 Smith joined California's A.J. Jackson and Shippensburg's Mike Harris as the only three receivers with 10 or more touchdowns during the season. Smith's 10 receiving touchdowns marked only the third time in school history that a receiver hauled in at least 10 touchdowns through the air. The last time a receiver hit the 10 touchdown mark was Sean Scott in 2000, and no Marauder has ever had two seasons of 10 receiving touchdowns.
• Smith averaged 6.5 points a game a season ago, ranking him fourth in the conference and also ranked fifth in catches per game (4.55) and 10th in receiving yards (66.3).
MAKING STOPS
• Sophomore
Pat Maloney leads the team, ranks second in the PSAC and 28th nationally with 21 tackles.
Shane Gross, with 20 tackles, ranks third in the PSAC and 34th in Division II.
• Senior safety
Matt Sutjak is a prolific tackler for the Marauders. He has led the Marauders in tackles each of the last two years and has totaled 178. He started his 2010 campaign with 13 tackles against Assumption. It was the fourth time in his 23 career games that he has recorded more than 10 tackles in a game. He totaled double-digit stops three times in 2009 including a career-high 15 against Shippensburg on Sept. 26.
• Last year, Sutjak ranked sixth in the PSAC in tackles with 92. He was the first Marauder to total more than 90 tackles in a season since Joe Hollister, the 2004 PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year. Sutjak was also the first Marauder to lead the team in tackles in back-to-back seasons since Lee Rizzotto (1997-1999). Since tackle stats started being tracked in 1973, only John Petrus (1986-88) and Rizzotto have led the Marauders in tackles for three-straight seasons. Sutjak has an opportunity to join that club this year.
O CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN
• The Millersville football team voted a trio of players as the captains for the 2010 season. Seniors
Bill Shirk,
Jamal Smith and
Chad Miller will assume the roles.
Chad Miller was also voted a captain in 2009, making him a rare two-time team selection. Both Smith and Miller were named All-PSAC East Second Team last year. All three players have plenty of experience. Miller and Smith are entering their fourth seasons as starters, and Shirk has piloted the team as the quarterback for two seasons.
BACK FOR MORE
• Four Millersville players were named All-PSAC East in 2009 but just two return. Defensive tackle
Chad Miller was named All-PSAC East Second team and wide receiver
Jamal Smith was also named All-PSAC East Second Team. In addition to his postseason mention, Smith was selected as the PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 25 for his four-touchdown, 255-all-purpose-yard performance against Kutztown. Smith was also the 2007 PSAC East Rookie of the Year as a quarterback. That season he threw for 807 yards and rushed for 633.
• Miller has an opportunity to enter select company as a Millersville defensive tackle. The last Marauder defensive tackle to earn back-to-back All-PSAC East mention was Jamar Gordon in 1995-96.
A GRAND MILESTONE
• In Millersville's 120 years of football, only a handful of players have totaled 1,000 yards rushing or 1,000 yards receiving in a season. 1,000 yards rushing has been accomplished 14 times since 1970 and only Ricke Stonewall eclipsed that mark twice. Totaling 1,000 yards receiving is even more rare as only Mike McFetridge (1,131) and Sean Scott (1,030) accomplished the feat. They hit the milestone back-to-back in 1998 and 1999.
HOME SWEET HOME
• The 2010 schedule sets up well for the Marauders early with the first five games all coming at home. A season after playing three non-conference games on the road, the Marauders play all three non-conference games at home, and open PSAC East play with two more home games.
• Millersville is 129-69-3 all-time at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium but has posted 1-4 home records in each of the last three seasons. Millersville has not won more than two home games in a season since 2004.
