Marauders Use Extra Innings to Upset No. 6 West Chester

Game 1
Game 2

West Chester, Pa. - Derek Kline recorded four hits and drove in three runs including two in extra innings to spark the Millersville baseball team to a 9-6 upset of No. 6 West Chester Friday afternoon. The win extended the Marauders' winning streak to six, but it was halted in the nightcap when the Golden Rams edged Millersville 6-5 by holding off a late Marauder rally.

Millersville (15-16, 9-7 PSAC East) won for the ninth time in 12 games, and the game one victory was its first win over West Chester (27-6, 13-3 PSAC East) since 2006. While the Marauders came up with a split, they held West Chester to 11 runs on the day--its lowest doubleheader total all season. West Chester entered the day having scored more than 10 runs in three-straight games and 16 times in this year.

The Marauders started Forrest Mengle in game one, and the senior, working on three days rest, gave up two runs in the first on a Kyle Orensky home run. Mengle responded by holding the Golden Rams to one hit and blanking them on the scoreboard over the next four innings.

With Mengle in command, the Marauders charged in front. Freshman Jeff Heisey singled in a run in the second, and the next inning, Corey Phelan drove in a run with a single, and Adam Boyd came through with an RBI ground out.

West Chester tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth off of Kline, but the tie was only momentary. Millersville jumped in front by two in the top of the seventh on an RBI double from Kline, and Miles Gallagher drove in Kline in the next at bat.

Zach Eckley (1-1), who was a perfect 3-for-3 in save chances this year, entered in the  bottom of the seventh. West Chester, however, scored two on a solo homer and RBI single to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

Millersville's bats jumped all over the West Chester bullpen in the top of the eighth. Kent Gerdes started the charge with a single, and with three hits and two West Chester errors, the Marauders piled up four runs. Gerdes scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, Kline singled home a pair, and Gallagher drove in one with an RBI double.

Eckley opened the bottom of the eighth with two-straight strikeouts, and after a West Chester single, he forced Orensky to fly out to earn his first win over the year. Carmen Daddario (4-2) took the loss after giving up four runs in 1.2 innings.

Along with Kline's four hits and three RBIs, Gallagher went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Chris Edgar also totaled two hits and two runs.

West Chester handed Millersville its sixth one-run defeat of the season in game two by jumping out to an early 2-0 lead again. This time, the Marauders couldn't keep pace. Despite taking a 3-2 lead in the third on four hits including a two-run double from Gallagher and an RBI single by Phelan.

West Chester retied the game in the third and built the lead to 6-3 by the fifth. All six runs came off of Millersville starter Ryan Stauffer (4-2), who worked six innings.

The offense tried to pick up Stauffer in the seventh. Heisey led off the frame with a solo home run. Gallagher drove in another run to bring Millersville within one. Phelan drew a walk putting the go-ahead run on first, but Jordan Lehman came on to get the last out.

Fred Breidenbach (8-0) picked up the win despite giving up 10 hits and five runs in 6.2 innings.

Gallagher led Millersville with three hits and three RBIs, giving him five hits and five RBIs in the doubleheader.

Tuesday's games were the start of a busy week for the Marauders. Shepherd visits Millersville Wednesday at 1 p.m., and Philadelphia comes to campus on Thursday for a single nine-inning game.
