Indiana, Pa. - The Millersville baseball team dropped a PSAC crossover doubleheader at Indiana (Pa.) Tuesday afternoon. IUP won the opener 11-4 and then edged the Marauders by a 2-1 score in game two.
Millersville (19-19) managed just nine hits in the two games combined, but IUP (20-19) needed a run in the final inning of game two to gain the sweep.
Game two starter
Jason S. Long (2-3) was outstanding for the second-straight start, hurling 6.2 innings and allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven. It was his pitching that kept the Marauders in the game.
With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, IUP started a rally with a walk and hit batsman. Long retired two batters, but Frank Sirolli recorded an RBI single to center, giving IUP a one-run victory and handing the Marauders their sixth one-run defeat of the season.
Stephen Cooke (3-2) notched the win after throwing two shutout innings in relief. IUP scored its other run on a double steal in the second inning. Millersville's
Corey Phelan provided the team with a run with a solo home run in the top of the fourth.
IUP scored 11 runs on just eight hits the opener, and put seven runs on the board in the first two innings. Millersville's defense did little to help starter
Kyle Belanchik, committing almost as many errors (three) as it recorded hits (four). The errors led to six unearned runs. Reigning PSAC West Player of the Week Kyle Stryker provided four of the team's five runs in the second on one swing of the bat. After two errors, a walk and a hit batsman, Stryker hit a grand slam. T.J. Nichols added a three-run homer for the Crimson Hawks in the fourth.
Millersville scored all four runs in the third inning.
Miles Gallagher drove in a run,
Corey Phelan plated two runs with a double, and
Ryan Chesler added an RBI single.
Adam Boyd led the Marauders with two hits in the game.
Belanchik (1-4) took the loss after allowing 10 runs--four earned--on six hits and three walks. Tyler Squibbs (1-0) earned the win with 4.2 shutout innings of relief work.
Millersville travels to East Stroudsburg Friday, beginning a crucial PSAC Eastern Division series. The Marauders, at 9-7 in the division and in third place, will have an opportunity to solidify its spot as one of four teams from the division to reach the postseason.
