Philadelphia, Pa. - The Millersville baseball team totaled 21 runs and 30 hits in a doubleheader sweep of the University of Sciences in Philadelphia Sunday afternoon. Millersville won the opener 11-1 and out-slugged the Devils 10-5 in game two.
With the wins, the Marauders move above .500 to 19-17 overall. It marks the first time all year they are two games above .500. The 21 runs were the most scored in a doubleheader since totaling 27 against Salem International on on Feb. 27, and the 18 hits recorded in game two were a season high.
Adam Boyd finished the day with six hits in nine at bats. He also swiped two bases and scored five runs.
Ryan McCormick went 5-for-9 with two doubles, five runs, and three RBIs.
Miles Gallagher totaled four hits and four RBIs, and
Keith Spencer drove in four runs and hit his first homer of the season in game one.
Derek Kline (3-3), who went a combined 5-for-10 with four RBIs at the plate, also starred on the hill in the opener. He worked six innings and for the fifth-straight appearance, he allowed no more than one earned run. Kline fanned seven and didn't walk a batter Sunday.
To go along with his game one pitching efforts, Kline led the Marauders with three hits and two RBIs.
The hits kept coming in the nightcap. The Marauders scored all 10 of their runs in the first three innings, including five of six hits in the first. McCormick opened the game with a double and the next four Marauders followed with hits. The first five Marauders to go to the plate all reached base and scored.
Millersville added two more in the second and three more in the third, giving starter
Forrest Mengle plenty of room to work. The senior lefty was not as sharp as usual, giving up five runs and lasting just two innings. But
Ryan Stauffer (4-2) came on in relief and pitched five shutout innings.
Boyd paced Millersville with four hits, and six Marauders had at least two hits. Nine different players tallied at least one hit.
The Marauders, winners of 10 of the last 12 games, travel to Indiana (Pa.) Tuesday for a PSAC crossover doubleheader.
