Bullpen Falters Late in 10-9 Loss to Chowan

Box Score

Murfreesboro, N.C. - Millersville built a 4-0 lead over homestanding Chowan Sunday afternoon, but the Marauder pitching staff surrendered 10 runs in the final three innings, and the Marauders fell, 10-9.

Just one day earlier, the bullpen threw 7.1 innings without allowing a run in helping the Marauders (5-5) to two wins. Millersville starter Derek Kline opened Sunday's nine-inning affair with five shutout innings, but Chowan closed Millersville's lead to one after scoring three runs in the sixth, ending Kline's afternoon.

None of Millersville's three relievers lasted more than two-thirds of an inning, and Chowan struck for two in the seventh and five more in the eighth to take a commanding lead.

The Marauders rallied for two runs in the top of the eighth using back-to-back RBIs from Adam Boyd and Kent Gerdes, a single from Scott Stevens and a well-executed squeeze play by Carlos Medina. Chowan's five-run eighth put Millersville behind by four, but the Marauders weren't finished. Miles Gallagher and Chris Edgar singled and Gerdes followed with a two-out, three-run homer, pulling Millersville to within one. But Chowan reliever Robert Weaver was able to get pinch hitter Ryan Chesler to fly out, halting the Marauders' comeback.

Six different Marauders tallied two hits, but they were still outhit by Chowan, 14-13. Gerdes built upon yesterday's 3-for-3 effort with two hits, two runs and four RBIs. Edgar recorded two more hits, giving him at least two hits in each of the last five games and 14 hits in the last six games.

Kline struck out three, walked two and allowed seven hits over six innings, but he took a no decision. Andrew Hunt was tagged with the loss.

Millersville travels to Barton for a doubleheader Monday afternoon.
