Game 1
Game 2
Murfreesboro, N.C. - The Millersville baseball team used extra innings in game one and a late rally in game two to sweep Saturday's doubleheader against Chowan and boost its winning streak to five games.
The Marauders (5-4) haven't lost since dropping four to Georgia College & State in the season-opening series, but to extend their winning streak, they needed some late-game heroics. In game one, Millersville overcame a dramatic Chowan (6-9-1) grand slam to win 6-5 in extra innings on a
Derek Kline homer. In the nightcap, the Marauders scored four runs in the final two at bats, including three in the top of the seventh, to win, 9-6.
The Marauders' bullpen did not allow an earned run in a total of 7.1 innings of work. Sophomore #Jason S. Long (1-0) notched his first win by working 3.1 shutout innings in opener, and sophomore
Andrew Hunt (1-0) earned the win in game two for his two scoreless innings. Freshman
Walter Bishop, in his Millersville debut, picked up a save in the game two , as well.
The relievers' only mistake came with a 5-1 lead in the bottom of seventh. Millersville starter
Forrest Mengle, who allowed just two runs--one earned--and four hits in six innings, put Chowan's leadoff hitter on base when he plunked him with a pitch. Michael McMonagle entered and promptly struck out the second batter. But a Millersville error put a second runner on base, and John Kellett drew a walk to load the bases. After McMonagle registered another punch out, power-hitting first baseman Justin Bagley then delivered a grand slam to tie the game at five.
After two scoreless innings, Millersville put one on the board when Kline led off the 10th with a solo homer. Long secured the win for the Marauders in the bottom of the inning. Millersville took a chance by intentionally walking Bagley and putting the tying run on base, but it paid off as Long forced Chowan into a game-ending double play.
Mike DeSanto drove in two runs for the Marauders.
Carlos Medina,
Adam Boyd,
Miles Gallagher and Kline also drove in runs.
Chris Edgar led with two hits.
Chowan entered game two looking to salvage a split and scored three runs in the first and three runs in the third off Millersville starter
Ryan Stauffer. The Marauders, however, scored five runs on four hits in the top of the second.
The Marauders knotted the game in the sixth when
Kent Gerdes scampered home following a
Corey Phelan hit and Chowan throwing error.
Hunt stranded a pair of Chowan runners in the bottom of the inning, giving Millersville an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the seventh. The Marauders did just that. Boyd drove in two with an RBI single, and
Ryan McCormick boosted the lead to there with another RBI single.
Hunt started the bottom of the inning, but Bishop picked up the final out of the game by getting Kellett to fly out and leave two runners on base.
Phelan sparked the Marauders at the plate with a 2-for-5, 3 RBI effort. Kline went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Edgar, who has 12 hits in his first 23 at bats, stayed red-hot at the plate, going 2-for-2. Boyd drove in two and added two hits, and Gerdes went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.
The Marauders face Chowan Sunday afternoon in a nine-inning contest.
