Williamston, N.C. - With MIllersville's starters nearly untouchable and the offense clicking, the Marauders picked up their first wins of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Salem International Saturday by scores of 11-0 and 16-0.
Seniors
Ryan Stauffer and
Forrest Mengle were brilliant on the hill. Stauffer surrendered just two hits and two walks over six innings in game one, and Mengle, who started game two, notched his first win of the season by scattering four hits, allowing one walk and fanning six in six innings.
While the Marauders pitching was solid,
Ryan McCormick was just as impressive at the plate. He went 6-for-7 on the day with with three doubles, five runs and four RBIs. Four of his teammates totaled three hits apiece.
McCormick set the tone for the day in his first at bat of game one when he doubled. He eventually scored on a
Derek Kline RBI ground out. The Marauders added one more in the inning on a
Ryan Chesler RBI single. The scored stayed at 2-0 until Millersville struck for eight runs on seven hits in the fifth. Chesler picked up his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
McCormick was a perfect 4-for-4 in the game with two doubles, a triple and a single.
Carlos Medina went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs as well.
Brooks Rothschild came on in the seventh and struck out two of the three batters he faced.
It was all Millersville from the start in game two.
Miles Gallagher, who totaled four RBIs in the game, recorded his first by driving home Kline with a single. The Marauders posted their second eight-run inning of the day the following inning, using seven hits and capitalizing on three Salem International errors. Both
Corey Phelan and
Adam Boyd had RBI singles. McCormick and Gallagher also drove in runs in the inning.
Millersville scored at least two runs in each of the following three innings to further extend the lead.
Along with his four RBIs, Gallagher went 3-for-4 with a run. Boyd drove in three and totaled two hits. McCormick, Phelan,
Chris Edgar and Kline also had two hits apiece.
Mengle made way in the seventh for freshman
Jason E. Long, who easily closed out the Millersville win.
Millersville improved to 2-4 with the wins, and will look to pick up with three Sunday in a nine-inning game against Salem International.
